Chapter 13

My body froze in shock as my head screamed, ‘No.’ This couldn’t happen, he couldn’t be like me. Blake looked at me with vulnerability in his eyes.

“I know it sounds crazy. I’m almost sure that you and Sebastian are some type of shifter. I promise you, Ally. I’m not lying.”

I could hear the desperation in his voice. What was I supposed to do? Should I believe that he really has no idea what I am? Or should I stay wary as my body tells me too?

“Why are your eyes blue?” I questioned him.

His eyes crinkle on the side as he flashes me a smile. “Contacts.”

“Contacts?”

“Yes, here watch,” he said then began pulling a clear film off his eyes. The brilliant green shone as the blue disappeared. I scanned his features wondering what else he changed in order to stay hidden, and why I didn’t think of doing the same.

“The hair. It’s dyed. I figured since no one could make out my scent, they would know I was a shifter. Me dyeing my hair and changing my eye color made everyone assume I was a regular leopard.”

I nodded my head at him. “Smart.”

His smile turned into a smirk. “Was that a compliment I just heard?”

“It was smart to change your appearance. Everything else you have done is stupid,” I told him.

“Has anyone ever told you that you’re blunt?” he asked, but when he saw my face drop, his expression turned concerned. “What did I say?”

I flopped down on the couch beside him. “What do you think is wrong with Seb?”

Hurt flashed in his eyes, but he covered it with a smile. “I think he really likes you, and you know how males are when another invades their territory. He had you to himself for a while, and now he has to share. Not just with me, but with Korbin and your friends too. Plus, I think his cat has a lot to do with it.”

“Really?” I asked hopefully. Don’t get me wrong, I loved when Seb was possessive. What I didn’t love was him losing control.

“Don’t worry about it, he will come around. It’s times like these that I’m glad I didn’t keep mine,” he said with obvious relief.

I gulped and turned away. Why was I feeling ashamed that I had kept her? Was it because we had similar stories, but he had the courage to do it on his own? Then I remembered Korbin.

“Is your brother one too?”

“Yeah,” he said. “Now, why did you turn away? You kept yours didn’t you?”

"My shift wasn't a joyful thing.  They hated me, Blake, and I had no one.  I didn't know why I was different; I didn't know anything besides the fact that they wanted me gone."

I tried turning my head in a different direction once more, but he grabbed my chin to keep me in place. Looking me dead in the eyes, he began speaking, “You shouldn’t be ashamed, Ally. Your situation was different than mine. The first time I shifted, I was with my parents. You were surrounded by people who wanted to cause you harm. There is a difference.”

“You knew your parents?” I didn’t know why this fact surprised me. I knew something bad had happened to them for him to be on his own; I just never thought that he would have grown up in a normal family.

“Yep, we were the whole stereotypical family. Two story house, two kids, white picket fence, football player son. Everything.”

I didn’t want to ask, but my mouth seemed to have a mind of its own. “How did they die?”
