The next morning, for the first time ever, Kitty was almost late for school. She took as much extra time as she conceivably could getting ready, just in case Mike called about something with the girl. But it was 7:48, the school was 10 minutes away, and classes started at 8:00. She sighed and shoved extra granola bars in her backpack just in case, and drove a little faster than she normally would to school.

Upon pulling into her parking space she barely remembered to lock her car before sprinting inside and to her first class.

Later in the passing period, Barb was holding the flashcards Kitty had made and was quizzing them as they walked to chemistry to take their test.

"When alpha particles go through gold foil, they become..."

"Unoccupied space," Kitty answered.

Barb nodded and moved to the next one. "A molecule that can--"

She was cut off by Steve walking by and taking the flashcards from her.

"Hey!"

"I don't know... I think you've studied enough Nance."

"Steve!"

Tommy H. and Carol joined him as he flipped through the cards before looking up at Nancy. "I'm telling you, you know, you got this."

Nancy sighed and exchanged annoyed glances with Barb and Kitty.

"Now, on to more important matters. My dad has left town on a conference and my mom's gone with him, -'cause, you know, she doesn't trust him."

"Good call," Tommy interjected.

Steve gave him a look and turned back to Nancy with an expectant look. "So are you in?"

"In for what?"

"No parents? Big house?"

"A party?"

"Ding, ding, ding!" Carol teased.

"It's Tuesday."

Tommy mocked her. "It's Tuesday! Oh my god!"

"Come on." Steve smacked Tommy gently and focused back on Nancy. "It'll be low-key. It'll just be us. You can even bring your friends if you like. What do you say? Are you in or are you out?"

"Umm..." Nancy hesitated, while Kitty and Barb shared uneasy looks.

Before Nancy could answer Carol cut her off. "Oh, God. Look."

The group all turned to see Johnathan Byers putting up a flier on the bulletin board by the school entrance.

"Oh, God. That's depressing."

"Should we say something?" Nancy asked.

"I don't think he speaks." Carol quipped.

"How much do you wanna bet he killed him?"

Kitty whirled around to face Tommy H. with a fierce glare, and an edge to her tone that made Nancy and Barb nervous. "Shut. Up."

"Hey... Kit. Let's get on to class okay?" Barb said carefully, reaching out and gently pulling on Kitty's arm walking away from the group.

Kitty nodded and followed along with Barb but didn't take her deadly glare off of Tommy H. until they'd turned a corner and started walking down a different hallway.

Carol smacked her gum as she watched them go. "What the hell was up with her?"

"I don't know Nance... I really don't think a party is a good idea." Kitty said, on the phone with Nancy.

"It'll be fun Kitty, I promise. It'll do you some good to go out for a change."
