You look down at the entrance hall below as the Malfoys greet their arriving guests, flashes of green spark in the fireplace as elegantly dressed wizards and witches step out of the huge grate.

"Look at all the pretty dresses, little bean," you whisper, but Scorpius is far more interested in playing with your hair.

Another group of people arrive to jovial greetings and air kisses.

"Is it true that Cassia Zukunft is here?" a flamboyantly dressed witch asks Narcissa as she pulls back from an embrace.

"Yes, she's doing readings in the library."

"My goodness, I've not had my fortune told in years, how delightful!" the woman drawls, heading off in the direction of the gallery that has been transformed into a ballroom for the evening.

Another group arrive and you gasp at the dress of a young witch who stands near the back. You'd admired it months ago when you'd seen it in the window of Twilfitt and Tattings, a biased cut satin top with a waterfall of black taffeta skirt, it fits the woman below perfectly and as she turns her head you realise with a sinking feeling that it is Pansy wearing your dream dress.

"Let's get you to sleep," you murmur as Scorpius yawns and leans against your shoulder, and you step back and slowly make your way towards the nursery.

You sit before the little dining table as Portsky delivers your supper, the sounds of the party drifting up from below but Scorpius is soundly asleep in his cot.

"Thank you. Is there an orchestra down there, Portsky?" you ask as the plate is set before you.

"Yes, Miss, twelve-piece."

"Oh...wow."

"You want to go down and look?" he asks gazing up at you with a cheeky grin.

"I don't think I'm allowed."

"You could stand in the entrance hall and look through the doors, it's empty, I can stay here with Master Scorpius and fetch you if he stirs," the elf offers.

"I've not known many house-elves, Portsky, but the ones I have met are nothing like you."

He lets out a chuckle, "Ah, that's because I can get away with things!"

"Yes I know, but I'm surprised they let you!"

"They think I'm spying on them for the Ministry, checking up to see they're not up to their old tricks, so they treat me much better than their previous elves."

"Are you a spy?"

"That be telling, Miss," he winks. "Now go on, go see. I know you want to, and don't worry the baby will be fine, he's the only one in the family I actually like, though Master Draco has his moments too, I'm sure you've noticed that as well, Miss"

You stand in the entrance hall and peep through the crack in the great doors to take in the sight.

Bats swoop and flutter across the ceiling of the long room between floating white pumpkins carved in intricate designs that admit a soft light. At the far end on a stage sits the orchestra as before them the guests swirl as they dance cheek to cheek. Around the walls are occasion chairs upholstered in green velvet where other guests sit and chat while trays of champagne-filled glasses glide along ready for takers.

"Are you looking for someone?" a voice drawls behind you and you spin around to find Draco watching you.

"Oh, I...I just wanted to see the ballroom, Portsky is up with Scorpius, but I'll go back now."
