With a pop, a house-elf appears in the nursery the next morning as you are feeding Scorpius his breakfast.
"Yes, Fumly?" Hannah asks.
"Miss (NAME) is wanted by Mrs Malfoy in her room," the elf replies with a bob.
"I don't know which room is hers," you reply wearily. You've barely slept a wink and Narcissa is one of the last people you want to have to speak to right now.
"Second floor, Jasper Rooms, Miss," the elf replies before disappearing with another pop.
You make your way out of the nursery, down the stairs and along the corridor of the guest bedrooms hoping you don't run into either Draco or Pansy. The rooms seem to all be called after minerals, a play on the family name you guess though you are in no mood for whimsy this morning.
You find the door labelled Jasper and give a knock, a muffled sound comes from the other side and you open it and walk in. You've already closed the door out of habit before you realise who is sitting in their dressing gown regarding you from the bed.
"I know you were eavesdropping last night, (NAME), but my revulsion at Morris Flint's suggestion was not feigned," Lucius drawls.
"I'm so sorry, I-I," you stammer turning crimson.
"What are you doing in my bedroom?"
"The house-elf told me Nar-, I mean Madam wanted to see me and he told me this was the room, and-and-" with horror, you realise you've started crying, the lack of sleep, the misery of the previous evening and this fresh humiliation suddenly becoming too much.
"For Merlin's sake, stop wailing, someone might hear!" he snaps throwing a clean handkerchief from the bedside cabinet at you. "Pull yourself together, and she is through there," he finishes pointing towards a connecting door.
You nod, drying your eyes and offer him the handkerchief back.
"You can keep it, I don't want it back!" he sneers, "and use the door from the hallway," he hisses as you go towards the connecting door. "Can you imagine what she will think if you come through via my bedroom!?"
You turn and head for the other door.
"Wait!" He commands getting up and opening the door himself and checking the corridor is empty, "it's safe."
"Thank you, sir" you murmur exiting the room and going to the door next to it, also helpfully labelled Jasper.
You knock again and wait to hear the reply, it's clearly Narcissa this time and you enter her room for take-two.
"Ah, there you are," she says from the bed where she is enjoying her morning tea. "I wanted to thank you for stepping up last evening at the Flints' request, I know it's not in your job description and I was surprised you didn't refuse or at least argue about it."
"I didn't want to make things awkward for Hannah," you mutter.
"Good, well you'll be needed again tonight."
"Very well, madam" you reply robotically.
She gives you a curious look and then raises her eyebrows. "This newfound manner suits you, (NAME), keep it up. This attitude combined with certain developments at dinner last night may mean that I will be able to overlook your past misdemeanours."
"Thank you, madam."
"That is all, (NAME), you may go."
You nod and leave the room.
Pausing in the corridor you let out a sigh before tuning to make your way back to the stairs. You come to a sudden halt, up ahead of you is Draco. He looks the same as he did last night, hair untidy and eyes bloodshot but his robes are fresh. He looks back at you pleadingly and you turn on your heel to walk in the opposite direction.
