First story of a Halloween series!

There'll be nine stories in total!

--------------

A late night walk probably wasn't the best idea, especially in the woods in October, when you believe in all the Halloween scares.

Anne just wished she'd thought of that sooner. Because now the sun had set and she was on a hill in the middle of nowhere, far away from any trail.

And, since it's Anne we're talking about, she forgot to bring a proper coat, a rain jacket sure, but nothing that could keep her warm.

But back to the here and now, Anne was trotting around, looking for even a hint of familiar land, when all of a sudden from the shadows there were footsteps to be heard. And there was a strange whooshing sound with some dry leaves flying through the air.

The scariest part was that there was no other sound from anywhere. No bugs, no birds.

She looked around and couldn't spot another person, even though it was clearly someone running on two legs.

Anne kicked a stick into her hands, it happened to look useful in a potential fight. Maybe as a stake, she considered, or to hit someone over the head.

"Hello?" Anne called into the forest.

Her grip on the stick tightened when she heard a disembodied and muffled laugh.

"Who is there?!" Anne yelled, she was starting to get annoyed as well as scared.

"Who is asking?" a honeyed voice asked, still from out of Anne's view.

A person at least. A woman none the less.

"Oh thank fuck," a tension left her shoulders, "my name's Anne."

From the side opposite to the one the voice had came from, she could feel hot breathing on her neck.

She flinched and spun around, only to be met with nothing but trees and piles of leaves.

Just with her luck, it started raining.

Then eventually an ice cold hand placed itself on Anne's waist.

She, again, instinctively turned around, but that unfortunately in the direction that sent her into the arms of a tall woman.

The woman put her hand on Anne's waist at a different angle to look at her better, the glowing golden eyes met Anne's brown ones.

"Hi," the stranger whispered hoarsely, using her free hand to brush through Anne's hair, "you look nice," she cleared her throat then asked in a polite voice, "would you mind if I cut a strand of your hair?"

Anne still hadn't found the words she was looking for, when sharp nails gently dragged over her cheek, "are you a human?" the stranger asked curiously.

Anne gulped, but nodded ever so slightly, "yes... And you are?"

"I am willing to help you get back home," the woman said, suddenly sounding suspiciously sweet.

"I'm not sure I trust you," Anne huffed, her annoyance showing itself again.

"I'm not sure you have much of a choice, sweetheart," the other replied deadpan.

"I just need to get to that one spray painted bus stop near the public library. From there I will be good to go," explained Anne, just in case there was any chance she wasn't going to die.

"Bus stop, got it," the creepy yet enchanting stranger nodded.

She wrapped her other arm around Anne's waist and mouthed a few words Anne couldn't understand.

"I'm Catalina, by the way," she spoke right in Anne's ear while the world around them seemed to dissolve into sand.

The next time Anne opened her eyes, her legs were wobbly and she could feel fingers in her hair again, "how did you do that? Was it magic or am I high?"

"Such soft hair," Catalina mumbled, "I do have one question. I've always wanted to ask, do humans' eyes grow back?"

Anne choked, "I'm sorry?"

"If I pulled out your eye, would it grow back?"

"No! It would not! And it'd hurt like shit!"

"It would?" Catalina frowned.

"Duh! There are like over 2 million nerves in an eye," Anne groaned at how this weird person she just met wouldn't think that pulling out an eyeball could possibly hurt.

"Oh wow, does that.. Does that mean cutting your hair would hurt too? Is that why it's so long?"

Anne felt tingly and managed to smile, "I just like my hair like this. It doesn't hurt. Otherwise I wouldn't do my hair up like this."

Catalina's face split into a grin, "Fascinating!"

"Wait, don't cut my hair!" Anne stopped Catalina's hand, "I- I do want to keep my hair like this. I don't want it to be choppy."

"Huh, that's really interesting," Catalina was amazed.

"You are quite interesting yourself, what are you, if you aren't human?"

"I'm not really sure myself, but I can do a lot of cool stuff! But I turn weird at daytime."

"What do you mean 'weird'?"

"I think you humans would call it tired," Catalina scratched her chin in thought.

"Ohh, yeah, we get that at night."

"At night? But the night is so much darker! It's so comfortable."

"We can't see well in the dark," Anne started walking towards the area she lived in.

Catalina frowned, "is that why the man earlier wearing those goggle things?"

Anne frowned, "what man?"

"The one that was standing like 50 feet behind you back in the forest?"

"What?" Anne shivered, "I didn't know of that."

Catalina sighed relieved, "so it's okay that I sent I'm to the middle of nowhere? He was creeping me out."

"Thank you so much. I probably would have died haven't you came along. Why did you approach me in the first place?"

"You looked cute and cold," Catalina shrugged, "plus the weather's horrible. Was that okay of me to do?"

"Well," Anne thought for a moment, "I guess walking in the woods doesn't really scream 'talk to me' to humans, and maybe striking up conversation would have been a better start than scaring me half to death, but in this very specific situation, with me and you, it was alright."

"Well could I invite you to a walk in the woods tomorrow night?" Catalina asked hopefully.

Anne stretched and yawned, "I'll just wander in there and you'll find me?"

"Yep! You're one of the only people I've seen in a while, I'll recognise you!"

"I'm looking forward to getting to know you better," Anne interlocked her fingers with Catalina's.

"Should I walk you home?" Catalina had this charming look to her.

"I'd like that."
