Chapter Thirteen: Cousin Eleanor

(The Body, Pt. 2)

***

The boys set upon disguising El with silent purpose.

Mike used his sister's makeup while Alistair, Dustin and Lucas looked in Nancy's old clothes and costumes for a suitable disguise. Alistair especially tried to make himself busy with it, to ignore the ghost that was now hovering in Nancy's room, still trying to get his attention. They messed around a little, but at the end, El was wearing her disguise: a blonde wig, an old pink dress of Nancy's, white shoes and white socks, and some makeup.

They stared at her, shocked at how much the disguise truly changed her.

"Wow," Dustin breathed. "She looks—"

"Pretty," Mike interrupted.

El frowned curiously as his friends looked at Mike, who realised what he'd said.

"Pr-pretty good!" Mike hurriedly added, and Alistair snorted.

"Nice recovery," he muttered, and Mike shot him a look.

El, however, walked to the mirror and smiled as she saw her reflection.

"Pretty, good."

Alistair sidled up to El, smiling. "Yeah, you look really nice, Jean Grey."

El looked at him, her smile widening a fraction at the nickname.

Alistair kept up his smile, but it dropped when he saw what else was in the mirror.

The girl, staring at him.

She opened her mouth, whispering a silent plea.

Please, notice me. Please.

Alistair looked away, squeezing his eyes shut. Go away go away go away.

He felt a hand on his arm and the boy looked to see El staring at him with her intense brown eyes.

"Al, are you okay?" El asked, voice soft and inquisitive.

Alistar nodded. "Y-yeah, I'm fine."

El frowned. "Al. Friends don't lie."

Alistair looked away, ignoring both the psionic girl and the weeping ghost. "I'm fine."

El was still frowning, but before she could say anything—before Alistair could tell the truth—he heard Mike say, "Come on. We need to head to the school."

Alistair nodded and looked to El, a smile pasted on his face. "Guess we can know where Will is now."

El nodded. "Yes."

Alistair frowned. "You gonna be okay at the school?"

El frowned, before nodding.

"Okay. But if you aren't, let me know, okay? I'll talk to Mike and we'll find another way to talk to Will," Alistair said.
