Chapter Forty-Seven: The Appointment

(MADMAX, Pt. 4)

***

The rest of the period passed with Rowan and Robin discreetly talking to Valerie—or, in Robin's case, talk without rambling like she usually did around her crushes—and the dark-haired girl found she both liked Valerie and hoping that she liked Robin in that way—her best friend deserved it, especially after her doomed crush on Tammy Thompson.

However, all three of them only had that class together, so when the next two periods before lunch came, Rowan didn't see Valerie. However, she did see the asshole who nearly ran her over in her class right after, lounging about like he didn't give a shit about anything. He smirked at her when he saw her, and Rowan sent him a withering glare as she sat in her seat, which was thankfully two rows away from where the dickhead sat.

It was in this class that Rowan learned the dickhead's name—Billy Hargrove. And that many of the girls in her class had already developed crushes on him, ogling the asshole without any shame, and Rowan knew the asshole would be asked out a million times before the end of the day.

Good luck, Rowan thought, directing it to all those girls. If her encounter with Hargrove was anything to go by, the new kid was an absolute douchebag and she felt sympathy for her fellow female classmates who were attracted to the male sex and ego when he inevitably broke their hearts or was an asshole.

And never before was she more thankful for her lack of interest in the human body—that part of her handily shredded any wool blinding her to the asshole's faults due to his supposed attractiveness. So it was easy for her to acknowledge said faults and ignore the asshole and the obvious goo-goo eyes cast at him and focus on her schoolwork, nodding her head to Metallica's Ride The Lightning tape blasting through her ears.

Little knowing that the asshole's eyes had been pinned on her the entire class.

Now, Rowan was at lunch, sitting with Eddie and his Hellfire club. She'd briefly talked to Robin and Chrissy earlier, before they left to join the cheer squad and band tables respectively, and had seen the asshole sitting with Tommy H and the other populars—just like she guessed he would, and obviously trying to take the vacant throne of King of Hawkins High that Steve had abdicated when he stopped being a dick. Valerie, however, was nowhere to be seen. Rowan hoped she wasn't eating alone.

Maybe she should find her and make sure she wasn't...

"Rowan?"

Rowan startled, jerked out of her thoughts. She looked to her best friend, assuming he talked to her, but he was staring behind her. So she turned and saw the new girl she'd just been thinking of standing behind her, holding a tray and smiling.

"Uh, hey, Valerie," Rowan greeted as all eyes were on Valerie; unless you wanted to join Hellfire, hardly anyone sat at the table where Eddie "The Freak" Munson and Rowan "The Freak" Graveswood the Second sat, much less the new kids—hell, Hargrove had immediately made a beeline for the popular table the moment he stepped foot in the cafeteria. For Valerie to do this, she either didn't know the particular hierarchies of Hawkins High, or she didn't care. Both were likely.
