After the sorting finished, Dumbledore walked up to his podium.
"I have only two words to say to you all." He smiled down at the hall. "Tuck in!"

Golden bowls and plates up and down the tables filled instantly with food. Chicken, lamb, potatoes, and carrots.
"The house elves have really outdone themselves tonight!" I heard someone call from the other end of the table.

"House elves? There are house elves at Hogwarts?" Hermione said in disbelief.
"Of course, girl!" A very transparent man's head popped up through the table. I screamed.
"Hello, Nearly-Headless Nick! Good summer?" Harry smiled.
"Dismal. Once again my request to join the Headless Hunt has been declined." The man said.
"Er- are you... are you a ghost?" I said slowly.
"You bet." He smiled.
"So um- Nearly Headless Nick-"
"I prefer Sir Nicholas, if you don't mind."
"Oh- sorry. Erm... Sir Nicholas, how can you be... well, how can you be nearly headless?"
"Just like this." Sir Nicholas grabbed a fistful of his hair and pulled up, causing his head to detach from his neck, but not all the way.
"Okay, well... thanks for that." I managed, trying to stop myself from gagging.

"But you're serious, Sir Nicholas? There are
house elves at Hogwarts?" Hermione picked up the previous conversation again.
"Of course there are!" The ghost replied.
"I've never seen one around here!" She argued.
"Well they hardly ever leave the kitchens, sometimes at night to tend to fires and so on... I mean, your not supposed to see them are you?"
Hermione had apparently lost her appetite quite suddenly, because she pushed her barely-eaten plate of food away from her without another bite.

The rain continued thundering heavily against the roof and windows, another clap of lightning illuminating the room as the remains of dinner disappeared, replaced almost immediately by puddings and other desserts.

I sat for a while and closed my eyes, thinking about how only a month ago I thought I had no family, I had no friends, and I was being bullied daily by a stupid girl and her minions... if only Alice could see me now.

After dessert cleared up, Dumbledore took his place up at the podium once more.
"Great! Now that we all have full stomachs, I must ask for your attention while I address a few notices. Firstly, Mr Filch, our caretaker, has asked me to inform you that the list of forbidden items in the castle has been extended and the full list can be found in Mr Filch's office, if any of you wish to check it." An incredibly slight smile played at the corners of the headmasters mouth.

"As always, the Forest is forbidden to any and all students, along with Hogsmeade village to those under the third year." He continued. Mum had signed my Hogsmeade form, and I was incredibly excited to visit the wizarding village.

"Furthermore, I am sorry to inform you all that the the inter-house Quidditch Cup will not take place this year."
"What?" Harry gasped. I glanced over at Fred and George, who appeared to be at a complete loss for words, apparently too appalled to speak. I felt my heart plummet in my chest, along with my dreams of becoming the next Gryffindor chaser.
