Tapping his foot to the tune of 'Highway to Hell', Dean Winchester sped down the small country road in his prized '67 Impala. The windows rolled down and the music blaring, Dean hadn't felt so content in a long time. Sam was on a case in Michigan (something about fourteen deaths in the past two months), so Dean to it upon himself to find his own case.
He'd finished said case a few hours before (it happened to be just a simple salt and burn) and now the elder Winchester was just speeding down the road, enjoying the nice evening air, happy for once to not worry about anything and have some time alone.
"Hello Dean." Turning down the music, Dean sighed internally at his luck.
"Hi, Cas," came Dean's mildly irritated reply. Blinking a few times in confusion, Castiel decided he would ignore the tone Dean'd used.
"Did you know today is July fourth?" Cas questioned, smiling fondly at the hunter. Running a hand through his hand, Dean had to focus on keeping his eyes on the road and not looking over at the angel currently riding in the passenger's seat.
"No, no I didn't," he admitted with a quiet sigh, glancing over at Castiel. "Why?"
Castiel's smile seemed to grow, though Dean was sure that that had been his imagination. "The Fourth of July, as I recall, is also known as Independence Day and is celebrated with fireworks, correct?"
"Pretty much," Dean confirmed, slowly easing his foot off the gas pedal, slowing down significantly. If he was going to talk to Cas, he didn't want to risk crashing his car. Besides, Dean could tell that Castiel had to have a reason for going on and on about Independence Day.
"Could we watch the fireworks?" 'There it is,' Dean thought.
Thinking back, Dean hadn't actually watched fireworks for a very long time, not since Sammy was fifteen or so. Maybe it would be as nice as it used to be. And the sun was already setting (even Dean had to admit, it was beautiful), so Dean slowly coasted to the side of the road, rolling his Impala to a halt.
"Yeah, sure. I don't see why not."

Which was how a hunter and an angel ended up sitting on the hood of a sleek black '67 Impala pulled over on the side of a deserted country road, a light breeze ruffling their clothes while various hues of greens, blues, purples, reds, and more exploded into the night sky, illuminating Castiel and Dean as they leaned on the Impala. And Dean was certain that, when one of the brighter fireworks went off, he could just barely make out the outline of two shadowy wings behind the angel beside him. And they were more beautiful than the fireworks themselves.
