Question:
Do you think the events during this time were unique to the region we are studying or were they part of a wider international trend? Explain your position. What does this tell us about the culture and values of the time?

(My) Reply:
I believe that the events were unique to the region because although I'm sure many other groups of people in the world during that time were searching for freedoms in other places they didn't have the same reasons or go about it in the same way. During this time and years to come after it there wasn't a lot of colonization or disruption of cultures happening around the world. Sure these things did happen but in many different times and ways that don't make them all that comparable. I don't believe that large groups of people were leaving a main group of countries to escape religious constriction or to embark on a trip that would result in a new country. Evidence of this would be the colonization of Australia where the British brought convicts to Australia because the prison was full. I also don't believe that large groups of native peoples were destroyed and controlled for the same reasons or in the same ways. Also, the results of this colonization were slightly different than those of other countries that were formed around the same time such as the USA using the presidency while Australia follows under the control of England's monarchy. Another reason would be because the colonization of America was the event of the time. Even though so many things were going on in Europe, the majority of those things led to the colonization of America and helped influence the events that went on in the New World. The values of this time were very much to gain religious freedom and the cultures were to create a place where a person could practice his or her religion without governmental control. People of this time wanted to be away from the government controlling their religion which soon turned into a country built on the freedoms of others and the ability to voice against the government without being silenced.
