Question:
How does studying these events help us better understand ourselves as a people and a culture? What does this tell us about the culture and values of the time?(My) Reply:
Studying these events helps us better understand ourselves as a people and culture because it allows us to use these events as a way to grow as a people and as a country to improve the future growth of our country. When we take into account the main reasons for colonization in particular settlements we can see what they found important and determine if those factors are important to today's society. We can determine how important religion, education, agriculture, business, trade, and expansion are to the betterment and growth of our country. Education and religion have always played a huge part in our country like how we have the freedom to practice whichever religion we please and how every child has the right to an education regardless of race or gender. Although public schools don't follow the old rule of religion being the main focus in schooling we can see how we have grown to still incorporate the importance of education and allowing religious freedom. When colonization first started many schools consisted of just bible study for boys only, yet over time they slowly began to focus on more things such as grammar and literacy or sociability and vocations, and girls were able to participate in school. Over time we have figured out a great combination of academics and fine arts that allow for students to be prepared for the real world. Agriculture, trade, and business have always been a huge part of American society. From colonization to now, the agricultural industry has grown immensely and continues to show how important it is for the growth of our country. Throughout time we have learned what things are the best to grow and sell and which ones simply aren't worth the time. Businesses are constantly growing in America and we have learned from the past which company themes are best to work with and which ones are best to leave behind us and we have also determined what things we are willing to trade, or import and export, and whom we feel comfortable doing this business with. We have learned and changed who we trade with over the years and even start trading and stop trading with countries that we didn't trade with, to begin with, or who we did trade with, to begin with. We have learned and grown from these events and our values have changed, although not much since we have mostly the same goals, for the better and our culture has improved greatly surrounding the education of our children since it is much more inclusive than it once was. In conclusion, our values have indeed changed with the times while still staying true to the original ways and our culture has greatly improved through the centuries for the better of all people.
