THE LAST THING florence expected to be doing on her summer vacation was going to mexico, especially with robby and his dad. but here she was, sitting in the back seat of johnny lawrence's beat up van, waiting for him to come back from the gas station.

she hadn't talked much to robby so far on their trip. she was still mad at him for basically ignoring her for months, but she hoped going to mexico would help fix their relationship.

"god, what is taking him so long?" florence heard robby mumble. she paused her music.

"he's probably buying more beer or something," florence replied, glancing at her brother in the rear view mirror. "speak of the devil." johnny walked out of the beat up gas station, a pair of small red sunglasses perched on his face.

"got us some choice supplies for the next leg of our road trip," johnny held out the plastic bags. "mexican cokes."

robby had opened the door, the two sat on the edge of the seat. "i think they're just regular cokes," robby said.

"mexican candy," johnny said, disregarding robby's comment. "chicharrones, and just picked up this badass cell phone." he threw all the stuff onto the backseat, nearly hitting flo.

"it's got 60 minutes on it," robby said.

"that's like 300 american minutes," johnny countered.

"how did you pass fifth grade?" florence asked, opening up the bottle of coke.

"and i got you guys a little something to say "welcome to mexico," he pulled out two plastic bobble head dogs with sombreros. flo and robby glanced at each other, amused by his gift. "don't tell me it's offensive, i bought it in mexico it's their idea."

florence felt her phone buzz on the seat. she checked it, it was a text from anthony. she wasn't sure what time it was back in california, but she knew the time difference wasn't terrible.

ant 🐜
how's the trip
with r*bby?

florence laughed at how he censored robby's name.

floor
fine, i miss you and sam though
and they won't let me play taylor

ant 🐜
oh, how tragic

florence rolled her eyes at his sarcasm. but she was telling the truth when she said she missed him and sam, she had barely been away from them in almost two years.

"what are we actually doing here?" she heard robby ask johnny. she looked up from her phone, ready to eavesdrop. "and don't say this is a 'father son bonding thing' that's not gonna work."

florence turned her phone completely off at that point. "this is a father-son bonding thing," he started taking his glasse off. "father-son-daughter bonding." he corrected when he saw flo's look at him. "there's just something we have to do first."

florence looked at robby's angry expression and sighed. she knew whatever their father had to tell them, it wasn't going to go down well.

———————————

"you've got to be kidding me," florence heard robby say. at that point she tuned them out. not wanting to hear the endless bickering she knew was about to happen.

ant 🐜
i knew there was a reason
he took you guys down there

floor
i know.
i'm so pissed
i can never win with him
it's always about miguel

ant 🐜
i'm sorry
he sucks
you deserve better

floor
thank you
i miss you

ant 🐜
i miss you more

florence smiled at his message. sure it was cringey, but it was cute. her smile dropped when she felt the car swerve off the road, popping one of the tires.

she sighed, this is going to be a long trip
