The ghost of a rabbit appeared
Black and White and sweet of face
She looked like mine, who'd gone to a better place
"Are you mine?" I asked, a tear in my eye.
"Spin twice for yes, once to deny."
Twice she spun, upon my carpet, before she paused and met my glance
So many things I needed to say, and she waited, head tilted just so.
"I miss you. I love you." And all the obvious things.
But one more worried me deeply, and I asked it with fear.
"I wasn't as good as I should have been. I could have been better. Or spent more time. I really have to ask. Are you angry with me?"
My darling bunny turned just once, and looked at me as if I were dull. She knew I did my best, and loved her with all my soul.
She hopped close and licked my hand, then vanished from my sight.
And that was the last time I got to tell her goodnight
