..........
By now, Xiao had started to get used to the sudden switches between the different parts of your dream. Like the way mortals cycled through sleep, it seemed that your dreams went through cycles of their own.
Still, it didn't leave him any less surprised when he realized he had returned to Liyue Harbor, chasing after the person who held your scarf. Things seemed to pick up right where they left off, with him only inches behind the person he was after.
Finally, he managed to reach out and grab the white scarf, ripping it off them. The person didn't seem phased by this, however, as they continued running, not even looking back.
They reached another bridge that connected two buildings, but this time, instead of crossing it, they threw themselves off, landing gracefully below and continuing in the direction of Chihu Rock.
He wasted no time in following them, landing just as easily on the stone road as they had. He threw the scarf around his own neck so as not to lose it as he kept running after them. The scarf had been what originally drew him to them, yes, but now he was determined to stop them and make them explain to him what was going on.
"Stop!" He shouted, but they only ignored him.
Racing after the mysterious person, the sound of thunder could be heard around him. It didn't make sense, as there was no lightning beforehand, but nevertheless, as Xiao glanced up at the sky, he felt his eyes widen.
It began to crack like glass, following the Yaksha wherever he went. Suddenly, the voice from earlier spoke to him again.
"You need to hurry," it told him, sounding just as familiar as it had the first time. He swore he had just heard it somewhere...Maybe in your memoires? "One day." It sounded so loud, echoing across the city.
"One day. One day. One day. One day. One day..." The scent of rain became stronger, but now there was something else mixed in; blood. Before he could tell where it was coming from, a white light filled his vision, and moments later, he was standing somewhere new.
..........
The first thing Xiao noticed when his vision returned to normal was a pair of amber eyes staring back at him. Frowning, he backed up slightly to see the face that was connected to the eyes, only to realize it was his own.
Startled, the Yaksha jumped back, nearly falling as he did so. As it turned out, he was standing on the floating island above Jueyun Karst, the same one you laid on in the real world. catching his breath, he carefully backed away from the edge and turned to what he assumed was his past self.
Although there were fewer differences between them than there had been with the Xiao in one of your previous memories, he could still tell that this one was a lot younger than him. His hair was longer, for one thing. Xiao hadn't worn his hair like that since the Archon War.
In addition, his eyes held so much more life than they did now.
"Seems like this was before Y/n's death..." he mumbled to himself. His past self frowned now, almost making it seem as if he had heard it. Of course, that was impossible, as the Xiao from the present was nothing more than a ghost to anyone in your memories.
A moment later, your form appeared on the path of floating rocks that led up to the island. Finally, you reached the top before coming sit next to Past-Xiao.
"Sorry I'm late," you told him, "Were you waiting long?" He shook his head, not taking his eyes off the landscape of Jueyun Karst below.
Present-Xiao remembered this day. It was sometime after Guizhong died and you had made your temporary contract with Rex Lapis. You had been having a difficult time adjusting to working with him, despite getting along with all the other Adepti, and even Xiao himself. He had agreed to meet you on Cloud Retainer's floating abode for some peace and quiet between your patrols.
