The ultimate celebrity, Avery puts her best face forward while driving herself into depression when her long, healthy hair seems to be fading away.

In a way, this is my story, and for many women, it's theirs as well. From patchy bald spots to scarred follicles, alopecia is an emotional rollercoaster none of us ever wants to ride. And though they try, no one has a right to tell someone how to feel or how to cope with losing their hair. Most of the time, those of us with alopecia are trying to figure those things out for ourselves while playing pretend for the world.
Often, there's a lot of pain behind our smiles.
We may see ourselves as less than, not good enough, far from perfect and yearn for something we didn't realize would hurt so much when it began to fade away, feeling... normal.
If you're experiencing unexpected hair loss, you're not alone. I see you hiding, hurting, attempting to make sense of who you are losing and becoming.
It's not easy, and I wish for you, in your own way, that you will soon unearth what I discovered for myself. Hair is amazing, beautiful and a joy to have, AND losing it doesn't mean we have to lose who we have been for our entire existence.
We are amazing individuals, capable of more than we can ever imagine. It's when we are forced to ignore that part of us we allowed the world to create, that we serendipitously remain grounded while also learning to fly. It's through adversity such as this that we are able to soar to new heights and shine a light so bright in this world that no one and nothing can ever take it away. No Longer There is that revelation.
I pray this novel has helped you along your journey. And please, share it with someone else to make theirs just a little easier. Blessed be, and I'll see you on the mountain.
