Max looked out her window beside her bed, taking note of the snow glistening onto the pavement outside. Life is alright in Hawkins. Yeah, right. California was way better than this shit hole. The monsters of the hell called Hawkins was always hot on their tail. But for now, they're fine. No one's gonna catch them now.

The loud engine of Neil's new car came down the road, the car slowing and pulling into the driveway. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes and reminding herself that she was fine. No one was gonna get her now.

She leaned her head against her bed frame, staring up at the ceiling. Minutes have barely past since Neil had gotten home, her house already a war zone. Billy and Neil were arguing just as soon as Neil got home. Neil was screaming about how billy had said something dumb again. The 'dumb' thing billy had said was about how Neil and Maxs mother arent in love, which was true. It was the second time this week billy had said something about it.

Max rolled her eyes, getting out of bed to shut her door so she could try and filter out the yelling. She remembered this all too well, the exact thing had happened with Maxs father. Her REAL father.

She wanted to think about something other than the argument. She went and sat in her desk chair, leaning back and looking at the ceiling once again. Hawkins was certainly colder than California in the summertime, as California always had the sun ablaze. She's lost her mind atleast 1000 times already in Hawkins, but who could blame her. She'd probably lose it again another 1000 times anyways.

She closed her hand into a fist, pretending Lucas was beside her, holding her hand. She wanted to make it another night.

She hated change, she was scared of everything new, so coming to Hawkins was pretty scary sometimes, even without the scary monsters. She always felt safe with Lucas, even if she knew he couldn't fistfight a demogorgan, it was the feeling that mattered. But fighting all the shitty monsters didnt feel so bad when she knew Lucas was fighting with her.

A lot of people who have lived in Hawkins have died, but only a select few knew the real reason why. Most people were set on it being a devil town full of cults that do sacrifices, that wasn't really true. But to some people, they pretended everything was fine, nothing was going to scare them.

She decided on staying the night at the byers house, having a sleepover with Will and Eleven would be fun and get her mind off things.

She stuffed some things in her overnight bag, just some shirts a little bit too big, leggings, a hoodie, not too much but including all the necessities. She was about to leave when she glanced back, spotting two dresses that she had left on her floor. She grabbed them, maybe El would want to wear one. They could do a photo shoot out in the snow with Jonathan's camera. She could give a photo to Lucas.

She already had on relatively warmer clothes, enough so she wouldn't get cold walking out in the snow. She put on some boots, wanting to hurry up and get out of the house before the argument got physical.

She opened her window, a gust of cold air blowing into her face, making her shiver. The once hot air in her room was now a perfect mixture of hot and cold, too bad she wasn't sleeping here tonight. She slung her bag over her shoulder, pulling her legs over the window seal, letting both her feet fall onto the snow, leaving soft imprints in the cold cotton covered ground. She shut her window before turning and walking down the sidewalk, the only trace of her left was the fresh footprints that would be gone soon.

By the time she had reached the Byers house, she couldn't feel her fingers and toes it was so cold. Her only source of warmth on the walk was the hot air that she blew into her hands, making a smoke like steam.
