You know, there's a part of you that wishes you could say it was hard for you. That you spent the 3 years before meeting Silco dying in the streets, starving and fighting to stay alive.
Needless to say this wasn't the case.
Remember all that talk people gave about you being lucky? Well it turns out maybe they were onto something.
You walked out of the house you were being kept late at night. It felt illegal, like escaping out of prison, but you didn't want anyone noticing you. The streets were empty and the sky was dark so you restored to following street lights. It's not like you had a place to go anyway.
You had been walking, staring at the ground for about an hour when a car stepped right next to you.
"Hey! Kid! What are you-"
You cut them off immediately "Sorry bae, not interested".
The word "bae" slipped out of your mouth like it was saliva. Memories of your sister saying it non-stop were flooding your brain ever since the raid. You hated when she called you that, you couldn't stand that word, but it had been stuck to your tongue for the past month. You honestly did not care. You didn't even bother looking at who was in the car, you just knew you did not want to talk to any strangers until you got somewhere public. You were snapped out of your thoughts when the person in the car spoke again.
"What did you just call me?"
You looked up at them. It was a white car that looked very luxurious. Inside, in the driver's seat, looking at you was a teenage girl, maybe 16 or 17 years old, and next to her, sitting on the passenger seat, was a girl that looked about your age.
The girl in the driver seat spoke again. "Did you just call me bae?".
You looked at them with exhausted eyes. There was a silence of about 5 seconds before you let out a tired giggle and said "Sorry, it's been a rough night bye-bye". You started walking away before you heard a cackle coming from the car.
"Wait a second girl, you don't think we're going to leave you in the street at 11:00 at night. You sound like a drunk."
"Oh how sweet, and you sound like a sinus infection so what's up." You shot back without even thinking.
At this, the girls let out a sweet giggle. It was like music to your ears. You expected them to get mad, or in the best scenario, just leave you alone. But they didn't. It had been a while since you made someone laugh without falling or tripping over air.
The girl in the passenger seat spoke next. "Dora I like her. Can you call your parents to see if you can come with us to the party?"
The older one stopped her. "Oh my god! Sophia, are you crazy? What if she's like a murderer?".
"Shut up stupid, she's not a murderer" the younger one shot back. "Are you a murderer?"
You giggled. "Honestly, I just called you bae. I don't know how scary that made me seem to you, but..."
They both laughed. "See? I told you!" Said the younger one. "Get in the car you're coming with us.. bae." You laughed and got in the back seat. You didn't really know why, but you were too tired to think and you didn't want to keep walking.
The older one locked the doors and stepped on it. "All right kid, our school organized a party for the people of the council to meet the new generation so built over. It's very high class and that's where we're going. Do you have a dress on you?"
You looked at her with no expression.
She's scoffed and let out a laugh. "Sophia has a dress in the trunk, will throw it on you in the parking lot."
