MILES WAS INTENTLY STARING AT a news television screen that glowed with the news of Peter's death. He watched with sadness, the events of him dying and losing Gwen at the same time replayed over and over in his head. How much he didn't want to see him die.
Miles played with the two dollars and fifty cents in his pocket. His plan was to go to a convenience store, find a costume, go to the funeral, burn the costume, then look all over New York City if he had to, to find where Gwen was and make sure she was safe. He was not losing anyone else.
Miles pulled his hood over his head as he walked a few blocks down and he looked at the top of a small convenience store, a wrinkled banner decorated with Spider-Man drawings saying the words, 'Stan's Collectibles'. Miles pushed the door open, the bell behind the door frame ringing as an old light skinned man with many wrinkles and orange framed glasses directed his attention at the teenager.
"Hey there, would you like to buy-" the old man said, but Miles cut him off.
"I'm just here for one thing," Miles says as he walks down the aisles, seeing specially marked Spider-Man items, like mugs, and masks, and costumes. Miles picked out the biggest costume they had, the costume briefly sticking to his hands, but he got it free and grabbed a mask, all of his items being under his budget.
Miles slapped the items on the glass counter and he fished around in his pockets, bringing out a crumpled dollar bill and many coins. The man raked the money over to his hand, putting it in the cashier, making a clicking and a ching sound as he handed Miles a few coins.
"Keep the change. Have a good day," the old man tipped his hat as Miles grabbed it.
"Thanks," Miles said with no emotion on his face. "Got a bathroom?"
The old man pointed to the right. "Down the hall. Make a left for the men's,"
Miles nodded and he walked away towards the bathroom. He went into a stall, which was grimy, the toilet seats being a tint of brown around the edges. He took off his clothes, stuffing it into his backpack, then putting on the costume, and then putting his shoes and hoodie jacket back on. He stuffed the mask into his pocket and he zipped up his backpack, leaving the grimy stall and exiting the convenience store.
