"You will never guess what happened to me yesterday!" Tyler exclaimed, throwing himself into the chair beside Dan.

No one understands how Dan and Tyler became friends. Dan was a quiet loner who dressed in all black, and Tyler was a friendly spazz who was always decked out in colors. It was strange. When Dan first started working as the English teacher, Tyler wasn't really interested in befriending him. They just seemed too different. While Tyler never talked to Dan, he did hear a lot about him from his students. Apparently Dan wasn't as shy in front of his students. They described him as a sarcastic Internet kid who escaped. They also asked Tyler if he knew Dan's Tumblr. They knew he had one, but they couldn't find it no matter how hard they tried.

Tyler had his first interaction with Dan a couple weeks later. He was staying late to work on a painting for his room, when he heard a loud bang. He waited for a couple of seconds before deciding to go over and investigate the noise. Turns out it was Dan throwing himself against his classroom door. He had locked himself out after losing his key. Tyler found Dan sitting on the floor trying to tug his bowtie off; he seemed to have a hard time breathing. Tyler was tempted to just leave the boy, but he changed his mind when he heard sniffling. Tyler couldn't handle it when people cried. He kneeled down and helped him get his bowtie off without saying anything. He knew Dan was more comfortable with silence. Eventually, Dan calmed down and was able to talk to Tyler. He explained his problem, and Tyler managed to convince him to go home for the night. After that Tyler sat with Dan in the teachers' lounge, and the two became a lot closer.

After a month of hanging out, the two became extremely close. Tyler told Dan about the guys of his past, and Dan told Tyler about how alone he was in high school. Dan couldn't really relate to all of Tyler's stories about heartbreak, but he tried. Tyler was a bit better at comforting Dan about his past, Tyler understood how it felt to be alone.

The two often discussed why they had picked teaching high school students. Neither of them had really good experiences with high school in general. Dan always said it was because it was a reliable way for him to do what he loved. He could analyze his favorite books and help kids get on the right path. He did admit that he had wanted to be an author, but he never thought he would make it. Tyler said almost the same thing. He wanted to be able to do art, and teaching seemed like the best way to do it while making money. Also he wanted to be able to provide a fun place for kids to express themselves. It sounded cliché, but it was true.

Another thing that pulled the two together was a group of kids in both of their classes. Hailey, Laura, and Sam. They were best friends and kind of crazy. They were always going on and on about Tumblr, shipping, and gay males. They always had some sort of new gossip they were eager to tell the teachers. For some reason, the three had taken a liking to both Tyler and Dan. Perhaps it was because they were both gay, but Tyler and Dan couldn't figure out how they would know that. Tyler was pretty obvious about it, but Dan wasn't. They both also had a Tumblr, and they couldn't figure out how the girls knew that either. Despite how exhausting it was to have them in their classes, they were pretty funny. Plus the girls liked them, so they weren't huge disruptions in class like some people. *Cough* Zack.

The girls started incorporating shipping into their relationship with Dan and Tyler a couple months after that. They decided that the perfect relationship would be Dan and a science teacher named Phil. Tyler hadn't talked to Phil very much, but he was pretty sure he taught something to do with animals. Maybe zoology. Tyler heard about the ship first. They called it 'Phan'. He didn't tell Dan at first; he asked Dan about Phil to see if he knew him. Tyler remembered Dan turning a bright shade of red and then telling Tyler about how close the two had been getting. The two had gotten pretty close after Phil heard Dan humming the Pokémon theme song. Phil sought Dan out a lot after that, and eventually, Dan started taking a liking to Phil's antics. Dan couldn't resist the completely happy expression Phil wore when he was around Dan.
