Avoidance

↢ ❦ ↣

Everything is bleak today.

In your home it's silent. Your tv is off, the fans are off, even the little buzzing from your lights don't make a single sound. It's gloomy outside as well, gray clouds covering the sky as rain falls down among the people who go on with their everyday lives. They're on calls with their bosses or loved ones, assuring that they'll see them some time today.

You let out a depressive sigh as you struggle to reopen your pierced ears, trying to shove the little silver-colored stud through its flesh. You stand in front of your bathroom mirror with its door opened, all dressed up in a black color-coded attire. You're leaned over the sink as you try finding the filled in hole you're about to re-pierce.

You're wearing a black long sleeve, perfect fit so there's no wrinkles or any loose fitting that makes it look just casual. There's a pair of black pants warming your legs, hiding the bruises that are almost gone, yet their pain still resides from the littlest pressure. Your shoes feel foreign, having not worn them for the past two weeks, only lounging around in socks or nothing. Your hair is simply pulled back in the hairstyle Mitsuya assigned you, surprisingly comfortable and at the same time respectful.

Finally you get the earring in, securing it with its back. You take in another deep breath and hold it in for a few seconds, gripping the counter as your eyes close.

Two weeks. It's been two weeks since Baji's passing and his mother finally got the funds to hold him a service with a burial. You and everyone else tried pitching in to help her, but she respectfully refused and made the money on her own.

Then there was Kazutora who already had his private trial, and he was quick to admit his crime. The judge sentenced him to ten years, so when he turns eighteen he'll be sent to an adult prison. His trial was the last time the friend group saw each other, but none of you spoke a word.

Now today Baji is officially being buried, but first the viewing is being held. You and the remaining Toman members are attending, along with other close friends of Baji's.

The thought is what helps you finally release the breath you took a minute ago. You open your eyes to look at yourself, assuring yourself this will all go fine without any waterworks. However, if you know yourself well enough, you know it's going to be a struggle.

You leave the bathroom and grab your coat from one of the island stools, pulling it over your arms and buttoning it all the way to the top. It was warm and soft on the inside, a feeling you tell yourself you don't deserve. You then check your pockets to confirm you have your wallet and keys. When you feel them, you walk out the door and make sure it's shut all the way so that it can automatically lock itself.

You have thought about it all morning and decided on not riding your motorcycle today. There is too much crowding in your mind that it would distract you, and the last thing you want today is getting into an accident and missing your best friends viewing. You're not even sure if you want to see him in that coffin, knowing he's there and won't speak another word to you. Last time you two talked was when he declared you all as enemies.
