Caught off guard

A few weeks went by in Seattle and fall was making itself shown pretty quickly. Addison hated the weather here. Constant gray and rain, she didn't understand how some people managed to live in this city.

But she had decided to stay here, in the small hopes that Derek may forgive her. Or she may be awfully disappointed if Derek ended up in Meredith's arms, but at least she would know. She'd have the closure to end things and move on. And she would probably go back to New York because other than that, nothing kept her here.

The hospital staff blames Meredith for the downfall of the marriage but we really know that it's all on Addie and Derek. Meredith was played for a fool by Derek and the redhead firmly believed she could do better than him. So every time that a person said something snarky about the blonde, Addison couldn't help but defend her case. And people found it strange. Why would the wife care about the mistress? The attending didn't really know why.

While she was resting in an on-call room, she got a text. She looked at her phone and her eyes widened. Derek had created a group chat with her and Meredith.

Meet me at Joe's after work. Both of you.

So the redhead automatically assumed he made his decision. She would be honest, the odds didn't look in her favor. And she's already preparing herself to hear those words out of his mouth.

Instead of thinking too much, Addison shove her phone back on the nightstand, rolled over, and went back to sleep.

When Meredith got the text, she was really surprised. She hadn't talked to Derek much, mostly because she wouldn't let him say a word before she bolted in another direction.

She was nervous. She got worried that he would go back to Addison but she's also seen the way he treats her. And that the surgeon is very capable of finding herself someone better.

But deep down of course Meredith wanted him to choose her. She really thought that she had found the person she would spend the rest of her life with. And while it was childish to think so, she hoped things could go back to as they were before.

It was safe to say that the day went by slowly for both women. Now it was time for them to leave for the bar. Meredith walked out of the intern's locker room and ran face to face with Addison. At that instant, the tension could've been cut with a knife.  The intern and the redhead were standing a few inches away from one another. They looked at one another very intensely, both of their faces being emotionless.  The moment only lasted a few seconds, but if you had asked either woman, they would've sworn they stared each other down for minutes.

Meredith was the first to break eye contact and made her way to the elevator, followed by Addison. The elevator ride was relatively quiet, unlike the blonde's mind. Addison made Mer feels so small. Both literally and figuratively. In her head, there was no comparison between her and the ginger. Derek had married her for a reason, right? And Meredith felt so much jealousy.

But that jealousy was reciprocated by Addison. To her, Meredith was everything that she wasn't. Meredith was still young, she had a lot of life ahead of her. She was able to give Derek everything that she couldn't give him. And that, to her, was a huge threat.

Derek was already waiting for both of them in front of Joe's.  He looked up as the two women approached. "Ladies." They both nodded and there was an uncomfortable silence.

"Well since no one else is going to speak I may as well ask the question: why the hell are we here?" Addison finally said. Derek laughed at sighed" impatient as always Addison. Anyways I'll tell you why. I've reached an important decision"

Both women were on the edge of their seats but both of them had the same feeling: Derek was going to say the other's name. And the thought of that broke their hearts. But both of them had big surprises awaiting.
