AN: Insert standard spiel on first story/ fanfiction here. This is something I've had bouncing around in my mind for a while now and after some consideration, I decided to go through with it. I don't plan on making this super long but who knows it might change as I continue with this. As mentioned previously this is my first fic so any advice for formatting, grammar, and storytelling is much appreciated. This is also cross-posted on AO3 if you prefer that platform for whichever reason.
Silence is all he heard, or at least that's all he heard at that moment. The calm before the storm as some would say. This, however, didn't bother him in the slightest as it was a calm that he had experienced many times in the past in many different missions. This one would be no different, or that's what he thought.
Laying down prone in a long ago abandoned 2-story house was an Archosaurian male around 5,4 in height. On the shorter end for males of his race, something he secretly somewhat loathed.
Around him was an abandoned town, the residents nowhere to be seen. All around him were collapsed buildings, torn-up pavement, and the ruins of a once-happy town.
Regardless of his surroundings, he stood as still as a statue making no sudden movements, in his hands was a semi-automatic crossbow equipped with a 5-round internal magazine and a high-power optical sight affixed atop it. The crossbow was all black and had various scuff marks marking it along the buttstock and the body.
He was a light-skinned male with dark grey hair, hazel eyes, and average features. He wore a mix of greys and blacks, a simple Kevlar vest covering the majority of his torso and ending at his forearms. Attached to the vest was a small patch featuring a rook piece and the words in bold RHODES ISLAND, underneath the vest, were simple grey combat fatigues; they were nothing special or noteworthy.
The same could be said for his grey cargo pants, with various pockets filled with a wide variety of equipment and other provisions. One pocket was open though, the contents of said pocket laid out in front of him, a small baggie filled with crackers that he was slowly but surely munching on one at a time.
To his right was a black rucksack once again sporting the Rhodes Island symbol. Behind him lay the tail of an Alligator, which was grey in coloration with some small white spots running along the base, his tail idly at his side and like the rest of him, as still as a statue.
His focus was entirely through the scope of his crossbow checking the main road in front of him as well as observing the various buildings across from him.
For him, this was another day in the office, he and a dozen or so other operators were sent to investigate disturbances in the vicinity of a small town that had gone silent. The assumed reason as to why was a Reunion presence in the area.
This town was one that Rhodes Island had helped in the past, and so Reunion, ever the pain in Rhodes Island's neck, decided to remind the occupants what happens when you help the 'enemy.'
At last, his earpiece crackled to life and a familiar male voice echoed in his ears. "Squad 1 has received contact in the market east of your current position, squad 2 will move to assist as resistance is more than expected." The voice paused as if it was talking to someone else before continuing.
"Khamul I want you to stay there and hold that intersection for now. We expect Reunion forces to attempt to flank our squads in the market. I'm going to leave 1 other operator with you for a holding action, expect enemy resistance to be light as their main force is already engaged."
The now-named Archosaurian paused for a moment as he held up a cracker to his mouth processing the information for a moment before responding. "Roger Doc, what kind of resistance can we expect, has there been any news from our guys in the market?"
