"Baby!" My mother yelled and threw her arms in the air, before making a beeline to hug me, but y/n saw my discomfort and pulled me closer to her.

"Maybe it's best we don't all throw ourselves at Wilhelmina, Mrs Venable? She's only been awake twenty minutes," she spoke gently and my mother stopped, looked at me and then nodded slightly, stepping back.

She said my name and made it sound so delicate, I found myself move further into her embrace.

"How're you feeling Miss Venable?" The doctor asked and walked around to me, checking the machines beeping around my head.

"My back hurts," I said quietly and shifted around in y/n's arms.

"Do you remember what happened?" He frowned sombrely.

I just nodded.

"Miss Venable, you're extremely lucky your parents found you when they did, any later and you wouldn't have made it."

"It hurts," I repeated again, the pain taking over now.

"The impact twisted your spine. We've operated slightly, to twist it back, but the stretch has left you with severe scoliosis. Now, we're going to put you on..."

But I stopped listening.

I focused on the sound of y/n's heartbreak and kept my eyes closed, hoping I'd wake up soon. But it never happened. She drew gentle circles into my arm and I breathed in her scent of strawberries and vanilla.

"Do you understand Miss Venable?" The doctor asked.

I just nodded.

"I think we should maybe let Wilhelmina rest, this is a lot to take in for someone," I heard y/n say kindly and the doctor nodded and left.

"Wilhelmina," her father started, "You need to move back in with us."

This woke me up.

"No." I sat up slowly, with the support of y/n, who I rested against, and stared daggers at them both.

"You have to have assistance, so you can't live alone and your boyfriend is... well... very dead," Dad said firmly and I fought back the urge to cry and scream and kick. I just sat there, staring at them, and leaning on y/n.

"I will not move in with you."

"Well you have no one else," Dad sneered and I felt myself go red. I moved closer to y/n.

"I'm more than happy to take you in if you'd like, Wilhelmina?" Y/n asked me gently and I turned to her.

"Really?"

"Mhm."

"Please."
