Dancing with Shadows

Chapter 5

The journey to the city, Life, was filled with eager anticipation. Richard, Kate, and Emma set out early in the morning, their cart laden with carefully crafted goods and the essentials for their stall. The road was lively with other travellers heading in the same direction, all drawn by the promise of the royal festival.

The city itself was a bustling hive of activity when they arrived. Bright banners and garlands adorned the streets, and the air was thick with the scent of flowers and the hum of excited chatter. Richard guided the cart through the crowds, aiming for a prime location near the platform where the royal family would be seated.

"This spot will give us a clear view of the stage and ensure we're in the midst of the crowd," Richard explained, scanning the area for an opening.

Kate nodded, her eyes alight with determination. "More people will gather here, so we'll have the best chance of attracting customers," she agreed, already planning the layout of their stall.

Emma helped unload the cart, her heart racing with excitement. The city's vibrant energy was contagious, and she felt a surge of enthusiasm for the day's events. As they set up their stall, other vendors around them were doing the same, all hoping to secure the perfect spot close to the royal platform.

As Emma stood beside Kate, she couldn't help but express her gratitude for this morning. "Thank you for helping me this morning, Kate. I don't usually wear much makeup, but it is nice change."

Kate smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "You have a natural beauty, Emma. The makeup just highlighted what's already there. I'm glad it made you feel good."

Emma nodded, her heart swelling with appreciation. She had always been modest about her appearance, preferring to focus on her dancing and the joy it brought her. She knew she was attractive, but she never sought out attention or praise for her looks. Instead, she valued the inner qualities that defined her—her kindness, determination, and passion for ballet.

Despite the early hours, the streets were already filling with people. Musicians played lively tunes, acrobats performed tricks, and vendors hawked their wares with cheerful calls. Emma marvelled at the colourful array of goods on display, from intricate jewellery to delicious-smelling pastries.

"Let's make sure our stall stands out," Richard said, arranging their items with a practised eye. He placed the carved wooden toys and baskets in prominent positions, while Kate set out jars of preserves and handmade crafts.

Emma assisted wherever she could, her eyes constantly darting around to take in the spectacle. As the morning progressed, the crowds grew thicker, and the air buzzed with excitement. Families strolled by, children pointing eagerly at the various stalls, and couples wandered hand in hand, enjoying the festive atmosphere.

The royal platform, a grand structure adorned with gold and velvet, was a focal point of the market square. It stood tall and imposing, its presence a constant reminder of the impending arrival of the royal family. The platform was surrounded by guards, their polished armor gleaming in the sunlight, and a sense of anticipation hung in the air.

Richard and Kate worked tirelessly to attract customers to their stall, their warm smiles and friendly banter drawing people in. Emma marvelled at their skill, watching as they engaged with each visitor, explaining the craftsmanship behind each item and sharing stories about their work.

"These wooden toys are exquisite," a woman exclaimed, examining a delicately carved horse. "Did you make them yourself?"

Richard nodded proudly. "Yes, each piece is handcrafted with care," he explained. "We take great pride in our work."
