Dancing with Shadows

Chapter 9

The morning sun filtered through the large windows of the dance room, casting a warm glow across the polished wooden floors. The room was expansive, designed to accommodate the many young dancers who would learn and practice within its walls. Mirrors lined every wall, reflecting the space and creating an illusion of endlessness. Doors on each side provided multiple exits, leading to changing rooms and other parts of the palace.

Emma stood in the center of the room, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. It was her first-day teaching ballet, and she wanted everything to go perfectly. The children, fifteen in total, ages 5 to 7, began to file in. They were all noblemen's children, dressed in fine clothes and looking a bit apprehensive.

Emma took a deep breath and clapped her hands to get their attention. "Good morning, everyone! I'm Emma, and I'm going to be your ballet teacher. Let's all come and sit in a circle."

The children hesitated at first but eventually followed her lead, sitting down in a circle around her. Emma could see the nervousness in their eyes and knew she needed to make them feel comfortable.

"Let's start by getting to know each other," she said with a warm smile. "I'll go first. My name is Emma, and I love to dance. I came from a faraway place, and ballet is my favorite thing in the world. Now, who wants to go next?"

One by one, the children introduced themselves. There was Lila, a shy girl with golden curls; Max, a boy with bright blue eyes who loved to tell jokes; and little Sophie, who clung to her twin brother, Sam. Even Declan's little sister, Lisa, was here. As each child spoke, Emma made sure to listen attentively and respond with kindness, helping them feel seen and heard.

After half an hour of introductions, Emma felt that the children were more relaxed. She stood up and clapped her hands again. "Now that we know each other a bit better, let's start with some basic ballet moves. Follow me!"

Emma demonstrated simple steps and movements, guiding the children gently as they tried to mimic her. She walked around the room, correcting postures and offering words of encouragement. "Great job, Lisa! Nicely done, Max."

After fifteen minutes, Emma noticed the children starting to tire. "Let's take a short break," she announced, and the children gratefully plopped down onto the floor, chatting amongst themselves.

As Emma turned, she spotted Declan standing by the doorway, watching her with an affectionate smile. Her heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but smile back. She walked towards him, her steps light and graceful.

"How long have you been standing there?" she asked playfully when she reached him.

"Long enough to see what an amazing teacher you are," Declan replied, leaning in to give her a gentle kiss.

Emma's cheeks flushed, and she felt a surge of happiness. "Thank you. I'm really enjoying it."

"I can tell," Declan said, his eyes twinkling. "The kids are lucky to have you."

They didn't notice someone watching them from the other side of the room through one of the doors, a shadowy figure hidden just out of sight.

Emma and Declan continued their conversation, oblivious to the observer. "Will you be staying to watch the rest of the class?" Emma asked.

"I wish I could, but I have some duties to attend to," Declan replied. "But I'll see you later, okay?"

"Okay," Emma said, giving him one last smile before he left.

As she walked back to the children, she felt a renewed sense of energy. The break was over, and it was time to get back to dancing. Emma led the children through more basic moves, gradually increasing the complexity as they grew more confident.
