Dancing with Shadows

Chapter 10

Emma woke early in the morning, her head resting on Declan's chest. The sheet was spread across their bottom half, covering their hips and legs. Declan's hand brushed gently across her back, sending shivers down her spine. His voice was raspy as he said, "Good morning."

Emma looked up at him, her eyes sparkling. "Good morning," she replied softly, a smile playing on her lips.

They lay there for a bit, enjoying the warmth of each other's presence before deciding to shower together. The hot water cascaded over their bodies, and it wasn't long before the closeness and intimacy led them to make love again, their movements slow and tender, yet filled with a passionate intensity.

After bathing, they got dressed for the day. Emma noticed the guards staring at her before quickly looking away, a hint of knowing smiles on their faces. Declan led her through the corridors of the palace, their hands intertwined.

When they reached the throne room, they found the queen, the king, and an unknown woman already there. The queen smiled warmly when she noticed them, her eyes twinkling with approval. The king remained calm and regal, but the unknown woman frowned, her disapproval evident.

"Good morning, Your Majesties," Emma greeted respectfully, curtsying.

"Good morning, Emma," Queen Rose replied, her smile widening. "I trust you slept well?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. Thank you," Emma responded, glancing at Declan, who squeezed her hand reassuringly.

"Emma," King Kale began, his voice steady and authoritative, "this is Lady Jessica. Her parents oversee many of the palace's functions, including the educational programs for the children. Jessica is an old friend of Declan's; they grow up together."

Jessica inclined her head slightly, her expression still stern. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Emma," she said, though her tone suggested otherwise.

"The pleasure is mine, Jessica," Emma replied politely, though she felt a slight tension in the room.

Queen Rose intervened, her tone light and conversational. "Emma, we are very excited about your teaching. The children have already expressed their eagerness for their next lesson."

Emma's face lit up with genuine happiness. "I'm glad to hear that, Your Majesty. I'm looking forward to working with them and sharing my passion for dance."

Jessica finally spoke her voice firm but not unkind. "The children's education is of utmost importance. Their development in all areas, including the arts, is crucial. I hope you will maintain a high standard."

"I assure you, Jessica, I will do my best to ensure the children receive the highest quality of instruction," Emma replied confidently.

Declan intervened, his tone protective. "Emma has already proven her capability. She has our full support."

Jessica nodded, though the frown remained. "Very well, we shall see."

Queen Rose clapped her hands lightly, breaking the tension. "Now, Emma, Declan, we have much to discuss regarding the upcoming events. But first, let's have breakfast."

As they made their way to the dining hall, Declan leaned in to whisper in Emma's ear, "Don't worry about Jessica."

Emma nodded, grateful for his reassurance. "Thank you, Declan." Emma and Declan walked hand-in-hand back to the dining hall, where the rest of the royal family and Jessica were already seated. The table was adorned with an array of delicious breakfast dishes, from fresh fruits to pastries and savoury items. The atmosphere was initially light, with casual conversation flowing among the family members.
