The curiosity of a child can rarely be quenched. Of course, curiosity is how we learn, but it can also be dangerous - very dangerous.
"We shouldn't be doing this..."
"Shh!"
"But really, we shouldn't!"
"Just a peek, I want to see - and don't tell me you don't want to see it too."
The young girl pushed past the two boys and started leading the way upwards, up towards the surface.
Attuma, the eldest of the three, turned to Namor and shrugged. "We cannot let her go alone, and I want to see too."
But Namor was still unsure. "Ofelia - wait-" He had heeded the warnings, perhaps the most out of the two, and that outweighed any curiosity he held. "I really don't like this," he muttered, but his friends were already ahead of him, out of earshot, and hadn't been listening to him anyways. He would have added, 'We're going to get in so much trouble' but, again, they weren't listening. And besides, they already knew what consequences awaited them if they were caught, and yet they still proceeded.
So reluctantly he followed them, and soon, too soon in his eyes, they had arrived.
Suddenly, there it was, the surface.
Three heads popped out of the water, eyes above the surface. The sloshing water was bathed in silvery moonlight from above.
Despite being able to breathe both air and water, Namor dipped back beneath the surface, his friends following. "Okay, you said just a peek, and that was a peek. We're going to get in so much trouble." There, he said it, he voiced his concerns once again, that was all he could do. They could choose to ignore him or join him, that was their choice.
"Only if we get caught." Attuma gave him a playful punch to the shoulder, a playful but nonetheless forceful punch. "Right Ofelia?"
"Right." She grinned. "And I don't plan to."
Oh yes, in the years to come, their curiosities would surely be quenched. But danger loomed, and closer than they ever could have imagined.
