TW: Pregnancy, Childbirth, dying in childbirth, abortion, racism, teenage pregnancy
_________
Pregnancy is rare on the Isle. In the beginning, it was more common but now it's rare. There are usually about two-three pregnancies per year on the Isle. But only one or two live births and surviving mothers.
Because of the malnutrition of the mothers now, pregnant women are more likely to develop anemia and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy and hemorrhage after birth. There is also a high rate of stillbirth and miscarriage.
Now, twenty years after the creation of the Isle the majority of pregnant women are young girls under the age of eighteen, whose pregnancy was forced upon. They are also more likely to die in childbirth.
But, most women don't know if they are pregnant until later on because of the lack of pregnancy tests and medical care on the Isle. They usually don't figure it out until they start to show but some don't realize until they're in labor.
Complications are usually diagnosed, so women die without any medical care, sometimes with no explanation.
There are two midwives of the Isle, Lady Tremaine, and Anastasia Tremaine. Anastasia is the nice one, the one who will listen to your complaints. But Lady Tremaine is not nice, she will openly judge you while giving birth judging your situation.
Harriet Hook got pregnant for the first time at sixteen, but that pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. She never realized that she was pregnant because of how early the pregnancy ended, she just thought she was having her time of the month. A year and a half later at seventeen, she got pregnant again but this time the pregnancy was successful and she delivered a baby girl she named Harley.
Sammy Smee's mother died in childbirth to his twin brothers, Silas and Simon. Multiples make pregnancy worse, twins and triplets are more likely to die, same with their mothers who birth them. Today there are only two sets of surviving twins and zero sets of surviving triplets even though there are records of a triplet birth. Women who give birth to multiples are more likely to die than a women only carrying one child.
Celia Facilier, her mother died when she was only minutes old. Black women and other women of color on the Isle have a higher risk of death than white women. Due to the fact that a belief held by a midwife on the Isle, Lady Tremaine, that black women and other women of color don't feel pain the same way that white women do.
And Ginny Gothel got pregnant at the age of sixteen. She never wanted pregnancy but wound up with one because of the business she was in. She heard of women ending their pregnancies with varying success rates. She fell down a flight of stairs, but when that didn't work she drank a potion from Yzla, daughter of Yzma, and induced a miscarriage. She felt bad but her will to live was stronger.
Pregnancy is not a good thing on the Isle, women, and girls suffer because of it.
