After a child is born, they get a name. There is a wide variety of names on the Isle due to the cultural differences among the people imprisoned there. But generally, your given name is first and your family's name is last unless you're of Asian descent then it's the opposite.
Everyone's culture has its own naming traditions but the Isle has some of its own. The child is named after a parent, grandparent, other family members, or someone important to the mother. Sometimes it's practiced in the child's first name, other time's in the middle name.
Gaston Jr. and Gaston III are both named after their father Gaston Sr. But Gil is named after his grandfather Guillaume.
CJ Hook is named after both of her grandmothers Calista, her mom's mom, and Jane, her dad's mom. Harrison is named after his mom's dad and his middle name is James is after his father.
Freddie Facilier's middle name is the same as her grandmother's, Odie. Celia is named after her mother, Cecilia who died when she was born.
Meanwhile, Claudine, who was named in honor of her father, doesn't have any familial meaning in her middle name. Her father wanted her to be a good catholic girl so he chose the middle name of Maria Josephina, after the virgin Mary and her husband Joseph.
Mal, daughter of Maleficent has a unique situation. She has a full, longer name she just doesn't know it yet. Little does she know it's Maleficent, after her mother. But others like Evie who knows her full name but it doesn't have any familial or cultural significance it was just a name that her mother thought of once she was born.
Naming a child is complicated. Some kids are named after family members, others have cultural significance, and some children don't have any significance to their names.
