"It's all I know," I swallowed. "Ever since I was sixteen... I've been working here. I've always been a bar waitress. I don't know any different."
"You'll never know any different unless you accept my offer. I bet you get harassed all the time... But most of the time, there's probably nobody around to help you. Didn't you see how Piero had been behaving earlier? If I hadn't shut him up, God knows what he would have done. There's not always going to be somebody around to help you out, you know."
I swallowed down a lump that had caught in my throat, letting out a deep sigh that I didn't know I was holding.
