Chapter 9 - Cakehounds

Pastry Pov

The door shut behind Pastry and she looked at Red Velvet who was already walking away.

- Where are you going?"

- To the cake hounds, time is precious." (Why does he have to be so cold all the time!)

- Wait for me then! I'm supposed to be introduced to them?!" He stopped walking and turned around towards her.

- One thing, Dark Enchantress being OUR leader doesn't mean you don't listen to me aswell. Hush and hurry up, then!" Pastry sprinted up to him and he rolled his eyes. Before she could say anything else he started walking through the long hallway and she tried her best to keep up. Talking to Dark Enchantress properly wasn't as bad as she imagined, this place isn't bad at all. (I imagined her less pleasant..)

- Again, you're walking too fast." She sighed.

- Why is it so hard for you to keep up?!" She felt him grab her with his cake arm and drag her forward.

- Maybe because I haven't eaten or drank anything in what, days?! No surprise I'm tired." Right as she said that he stopped and looked at her. She couldn't tell if it was concern she was seeing.

- They haven't fed you in the Order?"

- They have.. but.. I had too much on my mind, I skipped a few meals."

- What do you mean?!"

- ..." All words disappeared out of her mouth and Pastry was left with a staring Red Velvet.

- Whatever we'll deal with this later just don't starve."

He didn't say more and just dragged her with him into yet another room. A cakehound was sitting infront of the door blocking the entrance.

- 27?! What are you doing here?"

The cakehound did a spin and barked at him.

- You were guarding the door? Won't even question how you got here.." He got a bark in response and sighed. The cake quickly moved out of the way so he could enter the room. When he opened, a long and wide area with dens on each side was seen infront of them.

Red Velvet was already on the move forward after closing the door with the cakehound walking dangerously close to him. She thought he'd step on it, but Red Velvet seems to know the pattern of the little creature's steps. This time she didn't run after when he got too far ahead. Instead she looked around the place from where she was standing, Pastry could see it was really well taken care of. She admired the work that was put into this place. Sleeping cakehounds of different types and sizes each with their bowls of food..

Pastry felt something rub it's snout against her leg and looked down to see it being the same exact face she met the first time she came to the Tower. Another familiar face. If the collar didn't make it obvious enough he was special.

- Hey there, Chiffon." She said and squated down. The cakehound looked confused at first but didn't move an inch away. Pastry then reached out her hand slowly. She petted it gently on the head.

Just the sight of happiness put a smile on her face. The cake then laid down with an exposed stomach ready to receive belly rubs.
Being here already felt much better than being in the Order, it seemed like a "brighter" option. It felt a lot more free and joyful even if it wasn't.

- Chiffon?!"

She looked up to see Red Velvet holding 27 staring down at her with his mouth in a wide gap. Chiffon immediately got up and stretched his paws. He marched over to Velvet proudly, with his tail high in the air and sat down.

- I got a little carried away.." Pastry said and got up.

Red Velvet just let 27 down on the ground and looked after it when it chose to sprint right to Pastry.

- So what do you think about this place?" He asked suddenly while finally getting back to his senses.

- It looks really nice actually, it's impressive."

- I try to give the cakes the best lives they can have, for aslong as they do live. Most of them never return after being dispatched, but you knew that already."

- No.. I didn't," She looked at 27 who decided to cuddle up by her legs.
- ,or maybe I did but I..."

- Didn't care, and I don't blame you." He finished her sentence with what got stuck on her tongue. They looked at eachother in what seemed to be a loud silence.

- You're not the first cookie to hate cakes. How could you have known better anyway."

- ..Will 27 get dispatched?" She said quietly while petting the little creature on the head.

- I don't think so, it's way too clingy compared to their brothers and sisters. They were already sent out a few times. It wouldn't make it, I'm afraid." Red Velvet responded with a hint of sorrow in his voice.

- What will happen to it then?"

- What do you think should happen?" He glanced over at 27 and then at her.

- I don't know, it seems very friendly.. we couldn't possibly get rid of it just like that. We can't just discard this lovely pup." Pastry centred her vision on 27 and couldn't hide her smile. Red Velvet noticed it and looked over at Chiffon.

- It seems to like you, and you seem to like it."

- H-huh? I mean I do.. it's cute.. am I not supposed to? Sorry I shouldn't get attached.." Red Velvet's expression softened at the sight and she looked up and met his eyes.

- You're cute too you know, no need to be so frightened. This place is now your home, you're safe." Out of nowhere came the feeling of safety, a feeling she hasn't felt in a long time.

- Even after what happened.." She closed her eyes tightly, waiting for the comfortable welcoming feeling to end.

- That's in the past now, don't feel guilty for it." He placed his cakehand on her shoulder and she opened her eyes to a warm smile.

- Do you want to give 27 a proper name?" He said with an affectionate tone she would never see coming.

- A proper name..? Why is that?" Pastry looked confused at him.

- She is your cakehound now isn't she? She chose you, quite obviously." As he finished his sentence the little cake started wagging it's tail like if it understood him.

- I want to name her.. Galette." Galette barked in response and did a cute little spin.

Pastry could see Red Velvet looking at her in the corner of her eye. She didn't know what it was, but his presence suddenly became a lot more pleasant. (I wonder if he feels the same way..)
