The deafening sound of the school bell rings in my ears and almost like its rehearsed, everyone stands up and scatters to the door. I step out onto the sidewalk and the October air fills my lungs. I grab my headphones, turn on my favorite playlist and start making my way home.
On the walk home I can't stop replaying that moment at lunch over and over in my head. Laila's voice takes over my mind as tears start forming. "you'll never be good enough for anything. You're just as useless as trash." Through the blurred vision, I look down at the tomato stains all over my favorite outfit. I can't believe she would do that I thought, looking up trying to stop crying.
"Mom, I'm home!"
"Hey honey how was school?"
"It was good I guess"
"You guess?" a short woman with brunette hair and a welcoming face turned the corner. "ohhh honey, what happened?" her toned changed to empathetic as she looked at my mess. Dropping my bag on the kitchen table and heading to the couch I started, "It was Laila again."
"Still? You guys used to be best friends."
"Yeah, before her mom married a rich guy." I said with an eye roll.
"What did she do this time?"
"She saw me sitting alone at lunch today and her and her friends walked over and dumped their trash all over me, while also calling me trash. I'm just so done with this school, there's nothing here for me." I stood up and headed towards my room, but my mom grabbed my arm.
"Oh (Y/N), you only have two years left of high school. Please just push through a little longer. It will get better I promise."
"That's what you've been saying since freshman year." I said climbing the stairs to my room.
I changed out of my gross clothes and sat down at my desk staring out the window. There wasn't much of a view. My window was right across from my neighbor's window. Maybe my mom was right. After all, I just started junior year of high school, there's not much longer until I graduate. I just have to push through.
