Age: 15
Today, the birds chirped - just like any other day.
I had a football match, and for once, both my mother and father could attend. "Hey, Dad?" I asked, my head poking through, so it was just in between both of their seats."Mhm?" He grumbles, keeping his eye on the road. "If we win, can we get ice cream on the way home?" I smile cheekily.
I watch as a small smile grows across his face. "Sure, kiddo, the place on 39th?"
"Yea, that one!" I beam, sitting back in my seat. "I think that's a great idea, Beth." My mom looked back as she spoke, her smile genuine and happy.
I smile back, knowing that we'd totally win.
At that moment, everything stopped. Everything was shaking. Beeping, screaming... Chaos.
Today, the birds chirped - but unlike any other day. The birds watched our subtle brush with death. They sang down at us in our darkest moments.
But they're just birds, what good will they do?Everything went fuzzy... "Connor!!" My mother let out the most blood-curdling scream. Glass rains on us like sparkling teardrops... spinning, everything is spinning.
"Momma 'm sceard..." I cry as I push all the air outta my lungs, a sharp inhale following shortly after.
I so desperately craved my mother, her arms wrapping around me, her subtlety comforting words.
Instead, her arm is led idly across the middle of the seats, red.. its blood, so much blood. Then it stopped, my eyes grew heavy, and my fingers tightened around my seat belt, my eyes shutting. I realise that it's not the seat belt stopping me from breathing, the question now upon me...
What was it?
---
The whirring of a hefty metal saw reverberating on the thick cage entrapping them, a coat chucked on Elizabeth's head to shield her from debris.
Severide stood, trying to get the male out of the driving seat, others gathered, some watching, waiting to swoop in at them like an Eagle on a rotting corpse.
Some at the other vehicle, a navy blue pickup that had been turned on its side in the scuffle.
Police swarm from every angle, most talking, attempting to get whiteness statements whilst it was still fresh in their heads.
Three jet-black crows perch freely on a railing, watching from a story above. Almost cooing at them with their lovely singsong voices.
"C'mon sweetie, stay awake." The paramedic begged, wheeling the teen through on a gurney.
The teen was dazed, still conscious yet everything blurred. The ride in the ambulance was long, moments she didn't have wasted.
---
"1, 2, 3, Shift!" The doctor called,
"Augh!" The girl cried, a wave of pain hitting her. She felt everything shift, her body being lifted and pulled to her left.
A necklace of plastic held her firmly in place, her now blood-red hair knotted around it. She led with tears in her eyes as multiple people left, the original gurney now not in sight.
She searched the room, and even with her restricted vision she knew nor her mother or father were present.A lanky nurse held a mask over her face, watching as the clear plastic fogged up.
The doctor called again, the second nurse rushing over with a cart of supplies."Nurse, we need intravenous access and leads. Got it?"
"Leads?" The student nurse asks, the doctor grumbles,
"We need a pulseoxymiter, and heart monitors" She starts explaining, completely engulfed in trying to gain a second line."She's got good veins." One nurse stated quietly, finishing up their handy work.
Elizabeth's leg led mangled and disfigured, held in place by a cardboard support.
"Should I order a cat scan, doctor?" The student questioned. Her question was followed by a nod, and the older woman listed a couple more scans she needed to order.
Lines in the emergency department were excruciating, and the backup in radiology even worse.
Four wheels screamed as they ran past. "Is that-" one doctor mumbled. "-it can't be..."
Multiple gasps escape as more people realise. This was one of their own.
Scratch that... it was two.
More wheels, more gasps - Connor and Ava... broken, destroyed, almost unrecognisable but definitely them. The paramedics called out, and quickly the once moderately filled department grew dull. Doctors and nurses ran into rooms, aiding the EMTs in the handover.
---
"he's crashing! We need a crash cart over here stat." The male called, starting compressions. "We need 1 of Epi."
A dark-haired man led on the bed, "C'mon Connor..." Dr Choi sighed in between his compressions.
"Pushing Epi." Nurse Sexton stated, pushing the drugs.
"Pulse check." The doctor called, stopping the compressions and moving his gloved hands to the man's neck, his head turning to watch the screen.
Everyone let out a sigh of relief, "We have a pulse." Ethan stated, "But, we gotta get him into Ct and page trauma."
---
Ava had got out almost unscathed. Almost being the keyword.
Scrapes and scratches, her arm disfigured and held sternly in place by a thick mould.
The doctor plastered sheets over it.
"Wonder how this will do under my scrubs." She jokes, no one is there to joke back, just some resident. "Excuse me?" She then asks, "Do you know how they are?- My.. husband and daughter.."
"What are their names?" The doctor asked almost dismissively, her eyes not leaving what she was doing.
"Connor Rhodes... and Elizabeth Rhodes."
The doctor looks up, "Dr Rhodes from trauma?" She asked, Ava just looked down."I'll check after I'm done here." She continued. Ava nodded, tears in her eyes and her knuckles white from her clawing into her palm.
After the doctor was done, she did as she said and went to ask on the others. Ava's mind left to wander and haunt her like it was happening all over again.
The crash, the screams... she shook her head furiously.
After a long ten minutes, Ava had given up waiting. She got up and scanned the room for her possessions, eventually finding them. She slipped her hoodie around her shoulders, putting one arm in, in an attempt to cover her gown.
It took a while, but eventually, she slipped her shoes on. That was hard with only one hand and a mild concussion.
She made her way out of the room, taking her iv bag with her. "H..Hey uh... I'm looking for a patient" She questioned, a lady in bright blue scrubs turning to face her.
She looked her up and down before giving her an accusatory look. "Are you supposed to be up miss...-" The nurse wondered her name,
"Bekker, Ava Bekker" the blonde sighed. "Can I see my little girl please?" She begged. The nurse sighed, leading her to a cubicle.
"This way ma'am." She smiled a vibrant smile plastered over her face as she looked back to Ava.
Ava followed, eager but apprehensive to see her. She fears the worst, but still continues taking steady steps forward.
The nurse pulled the curtain lightly and instantly the walked in.
