Hayley Mitchell. Me. Call sign, 'Flash'. I was the daughter of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. Top of my class at Top Gun. I got my name for my speed. Nearly faster than my dad but he would just beat me.
I was driving to the base Maverick and I was working out testing out a new aircraft. Today's test point, Mach 9. I get a phone call and find out from Hondo, one of the guys Mav and I worked with, that Admiral Cain is shutting the program down. I walk into the base with the aircraft and went over to Hondo and the others waiting for Mav to walk in. About 5 minutes later, Mav rode in on his Motorcycle.
"Hey. What is it? What?" He asks us.
"We've been ordered to stand down." I tell him. "They're scrapping the program."
"They say we fell short. The contract threshold is Mach 10." Hondo tells Maverick.
"Mach 10 is supposed to be in two months. Today's test point is Mach 9." Mav then says.
"Well, that's not good enough."
"Says who?"
"Admiral Cain." I then say.
"The drone ranger." Hondo starts to say. "He wants our budget for his unmanned program. He's on his way to kill the test and shut us down personally."
"Well, he isn't here yet." Mav starts to say laughing a little. "They want Mach 10, let's give 'em Mach 10."
I give him a small smile before starting to walk away.
"You heard the Captain! Let's get everything up and ready!"
Everyone went off and got things ready for the flight making sure that everything was ready to go. Maverick was training and getting himself ready to fly. Once he was in his suit, Hondo and I walk with him to the aircraft.
"Now remember, the contract threshold is Mach 10. Not 10.1. Not 10.2. Mach 10. That should keep the program alive." I tell him.
"I don't like that look, Mav." Hondo then says.
"It's the only one I got."
Mav go to his station while Hondo and I got to ours at the control center. Hondo was on the radio while I stood overlooking everything and making sure everything was all okay.
"Control, this is dark star. How do you read?" Maverick says over the radio.
"Dark star, control. Loud and clear. How me?" Hondo asks.
"Loud and clear. Takeoff precheck's complete. Ready for APU start."
"Ready left engine start. Ready right engine start. Thumbs for taxi. We are ready for taxi."
