Chapter 16: Forever Yours
"Derek, don't do this. It's not what it looks like, I promise," I begged, trying to get him to understand.
He only stared at me incredulously and with an evil, disbelieving glint in his eyes. He really didn't believe me, after all this time. He didn't believe me.
"I swear I'm not lying," I pleaded, "I swear." Then, I held up one arm in a defensive position in front of Alex, showing that he can't do anything without getting past me, just in case he didn't trust me. Which, as it turns out, was a bad move on my part.
His lips slightly lifted upward in an almost malicious grin. I shuddered in the midst of it. This wasn't the Derek I know.
He took a single step forward, just a single step and I tried to control my undeniable fear, but it still tumbled out. A muted yelp.
His features took on a radiant, mocking glare. "Do you care about him that much?" His tone was weirdly quizzical.
I trembled again, wishing he didn't take notice of it. But I'm sure he did. He smirked, taking extreme pleasure from my obvious discomfort.
"Yes," I said confidently, yet in reality, it sounded unsure and weak.
But it was not a lie. It was the truth I was proud of. I would do anything for him to survive and live. For him to be safe from hands that are tainted with blood and revenge.
"Are you positive about that?"
"Yes," I automatically responded, not wavering at all. Not an ounce, I wouldn't dare.
"Then come, Kate, come here."
I gulped, what was going on now?
"Don't make me force you."
"No," I mumbled, "no, I'm sorry."
"I won't hurt him, just come here."
"How? How will I know you won't take the initiative of hurting him?" I replied hesitantly and suspiciously.
"If I hurt him, I won't bother you ever again. I promise that on my life." The way his eyes practically glowed in the cottage's stream of sunlight terrified me.
But he wouldn't lie, right? He wouldn't lie to me, I believed that.
So why were my arms practically shaking as I sneakily hid them behind me? Because -because, despite everything, I can't. I just can't. It's too much. I feel like crying again, but I hold it in. I've been holding it in, for far too long.
"Okay," I said pathetically and exhausted. "Ca-can I say my goodbyes f-first?" I added, stuttering.
Please, please don't be mad.
He narrowed his eyes, "You have five minutes."
I let out a relieved sigh I haven't noticed I had been holding in, "Thank you, Derek."
I turned around with my back facing him. If his piercing stare could drill right through me, I bet I would be a goner by now.
Grasping Alex's hand, I talked in a hushed whisper. "Alex," I didn't know what to say, my mind was completely blank at such an unfortunate time. I knew I had to say something, though.
"Alex," I started up again, "Take care of yourself. Protect Erylne and the others. Don't do anything dumb, alright? Stay here if you have to, okay Alex? Be safe."
