Sarah's POV
After six days, on Sunday,
In the evening,
I was cooking dinner for the children. Today was the last day of my vacation. This whole week with the children had been really refreshing and full of happiness. Going on a trip with all of them, telling and listening to different stories at night before going to bed, teaching them things they were confused about—everything was really amazing. I felt lively spending my vacation with them and Gautam uncle. I was cooking chicken masala, chapatis, rice, and fish curry.
Tirtha and Sharad planned to take me somewhere today, but I don't know where. Because I promised Tirtha to go with them, I have to comply, even though I am not comfortable with their surprise plan. After my vacation with the children, they decided to take me to a fun place.
After cooking everything and giving the staff some instructions, I went to the gate carrying my bag on my right shoulder. Today I was wearing denim jeans and a pink t-shirt with 3/4 sleeves, and I had combed my hair into a high ponytail.
After adjusting my clothes, I went out to the gate where all the children and Gautam uncle were waiting for me with sad looks on their faces. I didn't want to go, but I had to earn as much as I could to provide everything for them. They also accepted funding for the orphanage, but our orphanage wasn't that popular, so only individuals funded us with whatever they could, not any companies or institutions. We didn't have any big funding sources yet, except for Vernam Group. I also didn't want this orphanage to be like a business rather than a family. I wanted the children to be loved, which is why we didn't take in more than ten children, so we could concentrate personally on each one. I also talk with them on video calls on work days.
"Bye, kids. Promise me that after I go, you will behave and be good kids, okay?" I said, squatting to their level and looking at them with a smile.
"We promise we will behave ourselves," they said in unison and ran towards me to embrace me tightly.
"My kids, I will come again when my work is finished. Promise me you will take care of yourselves, study hard, play hard, and also take care of Gautam uncle, okay?" I said, kissing their heads one by one.
"Hm, we will do it, we promise. But di, you have to take care of yourself too."
"I will, for you I will. Now smile when I go, otherwise I will cry too." I said, embracing them again and patting their heads.
"Bye di," the children waved at me with smiles on their faces.
"Goodbye, and take care. Now go inside, I prepared dinner for you all. I have to bid goodbye to Gautam uncle as well," I said, sending them inside the building.
Gautam uncle was standing there watching our interaction. He looked at me and said, "You should not overwork yourself. You should take care of your health, beta."
"I will, and please take care of yourself too. I have only you and these children to live my life," I replied.
"Beta Sarah, you know this is not true. You should also find someone you love and start your own family. Otherwise, I won't be able to face your parents after death," Gautam said with a crying voice.
"Please, uncle, don't say this. They already left; I don't want to lose anyone else. You are aware of my situation. I am well aware that no one will ever be able to love me after knowing my truth. After that night, I don't deserve anyone's love," I said, mocking my situation.
"It was not your fault, Sarah. And how will someone know if we don't tell them?"
"I don't want a relationship without honesty, and I also don't want to tell anyone about that thing. That's why I just gave up on the idea. Anyway, you don't need to worry about anything. I am doing completely fine. Now I have to go, otherwise Tirtha will kill me if I am late," I said, giving him a side hug with a smile on my lips.
