After Emilia Cortes just upped and left her old club, she joins FC Barcelona Femení in hope for a fresh start.
However, things seem to be even worse than before when one of her new teammates, the one and only Mapi León, seems to have it out for her...
(they're speaking German of course, but I didn't want to make everything bold which is what German usually looks like)
"Why did she do that?" I heard Klara gasp.
I had been sitting on a park bench for over two hours by now. It was Thursday afternoon and morning practice had been done for quite some time, but I'd have to be back at the training center at around six for evening practice. After a short lunch break, I hadn't known what to do, so I decided to finally call my best friend Klara. Luckily, she wasn't too mad at me for not getting in touch for three weeks. At the moment, I was just telling her about Mapi.
"Exactly, that's the funny thing. Out of nowhere, she suddenly follows me on Instagram. I guess Alexia must have talked her into it, but that's not everything. She wasn't even at practice the day after and we have Wednesdays off, so I didn't see her again until today. Somehow it was really weird. I noticed her trying to approach me several times, it scared me quite a bit to be honest. That woman is unpredictable, and it wouldn't be the first time she'd try to foul me. "
I brushed a sweaty strand out of my face. Today was a particularly hot day. The thermometer had climbed up to 34 degrees Celsius, which meant practice would be hell later.
"It's not as weird as you think, Emilia. You just always imagine the worst. What if she just wanted to apologize to you?"
After all, Klara was not totally wrong. I had a talent for always imagining the worst outcome and would overthink everything. Still, after everything I'd heard and experienced, I was sure Mapi wouldn't apologize to me.
"Emilia, there's something else I need to tell you" Klara said hesitantly. "It's about Sydney."
Great. First Mapi, then Sydney. My favorite topics for a conversation.
"What is it? Do I even want to know?"
"It's just... she was appointed as our new team captain this morning. There will be a press release later today, but I thought you'd want to hear it from me."
"She finally got what she wanted" I sighed. "Good for her, I guess. At least she won't be bothering me anymore."
"She's actually behaved ever since you left" Klara informed me. "She even started speaking to me again."
"And you let that happen?" I ask in disbelief. Klara was my best friend and Sydney tried to destroy my life, so I wasn't quite sure why she'd talk to her again.
"She's my captain now, I can't ignore her, Em, you know that." Klara defended herself hastily.
I let out another sigh. After all, she was right. I should just be happy that I got rid of Sydney when I still could.
"Listen, I need to leave now, we have team bonding in an hour" Klara informed me. "But let me know how everything goes, will you?"
I nodded which Klara obviously couldn't see, so I quickly added a yes. "Talk to you soon. I love you."
"Love you too."
