The fire... The only thing Chara remembered was the fire.

They had woken up in the middle of the night to find that their house was on fire

They had woken up in the middle of the night to find that their house was on fire. On the floor was their glass candle - shattered, their cat had probably accidentally pushed it onto the floor, causing the fire.
Their heart was pounding as they left their room as quickly as they could to get to the first floor where their parents' bedroom was. They needed to wake them up, they all needed to get out of this hell.
Their parents had already woken up when Chara came downstairs, as they were both screaming in shock, but Chara couldn't reach them because a piece of wood fell from the ceiling and was blocking the door.

- Mom, dad ! Chara exclaimed, trying helplessly to pick up the burnt wood from the floor. I'll help you !
- No, Chara, leave ! their mom cried, her voice shaking. Save yourself, my child !
- B-but, what about you ? they asked, tears in their eyes.
- Forget us sweetie, get yourself to safety. their father declared between several coughs.

Chara was shaking; they didn't want to leave their parents behind, but did they have another option ?
They made up their mind sadly, and after gently touching the door - a pitiful apology and farewell - for a moment, they ran out the front door, fainting in front of the firefighters.

They were the only survivor.
Their parents were burned alive, as was their cat. At the tender age of ten, they were all alone, having only a stuffed animal and an Alice book to accompany them, their only possessions that had survived the fire.
They were then placed in the care of an orphanage, but they were quickly sent to an asylum instead due to all the deep psychological trauma they had just suffered through.
They couldn't speak anymore, no matter how hard they tried, and their hands were too shaky to write. They were mute, but that was not all, they had become a shadow of what they were. They had let their brown hair take on an ominous length, they were Rapunzel stuck in her solitude. They no longer wore a dress, they only deserved rags. Those hazel eyes had grown stale, having lost the innocence of life.
Because of discrimination, Chara often stayed alone in their room staring at the white walls as empty as their soul. And, to make matters worse, they had started having these terrible adventures in their wonderland.

Doctors called them "episodes" and said they looked like their mind was somewhere else and stared at the wall with blank eyes, but that just wasn't true. Chara could swear on their plush Asriel, they had really traveled to this other world ! And not just once or twice, but throughout their life there too.
At the age of 15, Chara was still in the asylum and had no chance of getting out anytime soon considering the frequency of their "episodes".
Their only sources of happiness were three things : their Alice book, a sketchbook that one of their doctors had given them and, of course, their stuffed Asriel.
They sighed as they fell on their bed, maybe they would stay in this asylum for the rest of their life...

- Wake up Chara~ purred a low voice. The Underground needs their angel~

Chara opened their eyes and sighed; of course, they were right back in their wonderland.
This realm was called the Underground, and they were currently in Home... or at least it looked like it, but it was strangely in ruins - the pink bricks that made up the walls were all scattered across the floor.
They looked up and their eyes met the blue lights shining inside the sockets of a skeletal cat.

- Argh, what is it Sans ? they asked as their cat continued to smile. Something happened to Home ?

- Yes, exactly Chara. Sans confirmed as he floated closer. The rulepurrr of the Underground makes the life of efuryone here hell, destroying it at the same time as them.
- The ruler ? Chara asked, confused. What ruler ? I've never met a ruler here before...
- Well meow-velous fur you, they're kmeown as the red rulepurr and they're simpawly a megalomaniac. Sans said with disgust. You have to go to their castle and stop them right meow !
- What ? Chara asked, stepping back slightly. But how, I almost died last time I came here, and now I need to fight for a revolution ?

Sans laughed softly - an ominous sound honestly - and gently slapped Chara with his bony tail, surely to try to get them out of this mindset

Sans laughed softly - an ominous sound honestly - and gently slapped Chara with his bony tail, surely to try to get them out of this mindset.
Chara growled, they didn't have time for their cat's sassy nonsense; after all, how could they overthrow a ruler when they couldn't even pick up some wood ?
- Stupid human, who else can save the Underground but you ? Sans then said, dropping a knife into their hands. Take this and kill the rulepurr with it, the whole Underground depends on it.
- Sans, are you crazy ?! Chara asked, almost hurting themself with the knife.
- Come on, stay confident, you'll be great as catnip fur this challenge ! Sans exclaimed before disappearing. Good luck, maneki neko !

And just like that, Chara was all alone in the ruins of what used to be Home with a big, sharp knife; they sighed, they couldn't tell their doctors what would be next, or they would all think they were even crazier than all of those white coats already thought.
They cleaned the dust from their dress as they stood up, they had to begin their journey if they were to find this ruler.

Home was even more in ruins than they had originally thought, a mirror of their own current state. The village was empty, devoid of all life, with only a few children's toys on the ground to show what it once was.
Chara remembered coming here when life was too hard, drawing on the roofs with the other children and doing snail races with Mr. Napstablook... And now there was nothing. Where were the children's laughter ? Napstablook music ? The worried parents baking cakes in the street trying to get the kids down ? Chara sighed softly; there was nothing left, everything had evaporated like their home.
They wondered if they had all gone to flee them, if they were all disgusted by their pitiful existence.

- Hellooooo, there is someone ? they cried, walking through the village. It's me, Chara, are you there ?
- It's useless kitten, there's not a soul here. Sans exclaimed, suddenly appearing. Stop your hunt, you will only find ghosts.
- Aaaah ! Chara shouted, startled by the sudden appearance of the skeletal cat. Fuck, Sans, you've become so much more unbearable than when you were alive !
- But that's fur that that you love me, isn't it~ ? Sans purred, lying on his head.
- What do you want ? Chara asked with a sigh, dropping to the ground.
- Don't get lost in the past, you have to stay furcused on your goal. the skeletal cat called back, jumping on their lap. Stay determined, aftepurr you will have a cat's life !
- I'm just nostalgic, no need to get your whiskers in a twist. they said, rolling their eyes, before stopping. ...If you allow me the expression.

Sans simply laughed and disappeared, letting the cold wind hit Chara's bare knees. They sighed sadly, they wanted to stroke their cat one last time before he left but it was too late.

They got up and cleaned the dust from their dress as they got up; Sans was right, they had to concentrate on their quest, it was their duty. They had already let down their parents, they couldn't let down the Underground too.
Chara then arrived at the last house in the village... theirs. They didn't dare enter because, even though the house had nothing to do with their real home, they just couldn't manage to get close. Instead, they went to the tree in front of the house, their tree.
They had planted this tree during their first time in the Underground, as much for symbolism as because they loved gardening... another thing they had ruined. The tree was tall now, but it was bare and each time a leaf matured, it immediately fell to the ground to join its sisters.

Chara left the village and regretted it as soon as the freezing wind cut through their skin like a razor. They allowed themself to think of returning to the warmth of the village, but moved on anyway; they had to move on even if it was hard.
