Startled, I woke up with a gasp, my whole body spasmed as my eyes flew open. But the tension in my muscles was gone as quickly as it came when I sensed him move. My gaze roamed the room. I could see everything so much more clearly than I could a few hours ago when the pack was engulfed in the scheduled darkness of the night.

The white roof, the ceiling fan that rotated at just the right speed to evaporate the light sweat that stained my forehead. It crawled over the entirety of what my line of sight would allow until it settled on him. His gaze, unlike mine, remained in one place, me. It was quite surprising that just a few months ago; I wanted nothing to do with his man. Now I was here basking in the comfort of his attentive care.

"Are you okay?" He whispered softly and my eyes slowly shut, tight before I opened them again and nodded. I wasn't used to waking up next to him, but I was slowly adjusting to the fact that this is my new normal, not having him whisper into my mind sweet assurances when I woke up in an empty bed but feeling his hot breath fan my face.

"You know you don't have to keep doing this, right?" I whispered softly, lifting my hands to cup his face.

"You should sleep more, it's not even six yet," he replied, leaning into my touch. It had been exactly one week since the massacre, as we call it now, and Malik had been so busy being the Alpha of alphas that he neglected other things, little things. Like shaving, it was just one week, but it looked like he had been growing out his beard for months. Malik had this ruddy appearance. Most Alphas were naturally bigger, but Malik was quite the large man and because of that, he appeared domineering. With his hot temper and everlasting scowl, not to mention his serious problem of constantly growling, he was the kind of person that just made you tremble if you met him. But his face, despite his expression, had this beauty that was uncommon. And it did not help that his eyes were so blue it caught me off guard each time they would transition from that deep hypnotic blue into the brightest and most striking shade. Now he had a beard, he just seemed more fuckable? Was that the word to describe it?

"I said you should sleep, not say my face is fuckable."

Damnit. How do I still forget he hears my thoughts?

"What's wrong about admiring your mate?" I asked.

He sighed. "You never listen to my thoughts, why?"

"Because you already say what you think?"

His eyes narrowed. "What am I thinking right now?"

I pursed my lips and let out a soft breath as I slowly thought about it. "That I should rest more?"

His brow rose and his lips quirked up in a mischievous grin. "You think I want you to sleep after you literally just said I seem more fuckable?"

My breath caught in my throat when he closed the space between our lips when he leaned down suddenly with that glint in his eyes. My eyes fluttered shut and butterflies erupted in my lower belly and the exciting sensation crawled even lower, waiting, shivering and expecting the contact.

After way too long I open my eyes and though he was inches away from me he didn't make any more movements. "You said-"

"I said you said I seemed fuckable." He retorted immediately and my lips pressed into a frown and my wolf whined in my head. Malik shut his eyes and moved away from me. I knew that look, he was fighting his wolf for control and I knew it so well I could pick it up from miles away. The only time Malik would ever fight for control was when I was involved. It baffled me to this day how he was still able to hold back after so long. Control especially when it came to something as intense and sacred as mates and the bond we shared wasn't something Alphas thrived in.
