"Report," Alpha Blackbourne commands. He's been on edge since he got here, and my wolf is desperate to prove himself.
"John Sorenson. 45 years old. Chemical Engineer, with a degree from MIT. He's legally married to Diane Sorenson, although he's got a second family up in Chicago and the mistress also claims to be married to him on her Facebook profile," I say, with a small frown. "From his records, he has one daughter—Marie—with Diane."
"So who is the second girl then?" North asks, confused. "She lives with him, and looks—"
"I'll get there," I say, cutting him off.
North sighs, but nods. He's got the drive to do something, but there's nothing that needs done.
Not yet, anyway.
"He was Alpha of a pack until Marie was around two years old, but he's officially been without a pack since then. They moved to Illinois when he stepped down as Alpha, although there's no understanding of why."
"Weird," Luke murmurs.
"Diane Sorenson is human, and definitely not his mate," I continue, reciting this from memory. "She's got cancer, and is unlikely to make it another year. She's Marie's biological mother, and honestly there's not much to know about her. She's got a medical file thicker than my arm, but she has nothing going on other than that. She's never worked, finished high school but never went to college, and seemed to have met John by chance."
I don't understand how they got together, but it's not truly important.
"Marie is eighteen years old, so a bit older than we thought. She's a senior, starting at Ashley Walters, and isn't the best of students. She prefers to spend time with the popular kids, and gets into a lot of things she shouldn't."
"So she's definitely human then," Kota says, and I nod.
"With her being a product of a non-mate, human-wolf, match, that's not surprising," Sean says. "I would've been more impressed if she were a wolf."
The genetics of our species is something that truly fascinates Sean, Kota, Silas and even Nathan to a degree.
That's not my thing though.
"Now, the other girl is where things get really interesting," I say, and the guys sit up straighter. Of course they're interested in her. "Sang Sorenson legally does not exist. She's not claimed on their taxes, there is no register of her birth, and the only documentation that she has is with Ashley Waters. The one from her last school is gone, unless there are paper copies somewhere."
"Holy shit," Nathan whispers.
"Her birth certificate is a direct copy of Marie's—down to the social security number with only a few changes. She's got no medical record, nothing. There's not even a library card in her name."
"Fuck," North murmurs, shaking his head.
"Fuck indeed," Nathan says. "She's clearly—"
"She is two years younger than Marie, putting her at our age," I say, before revealing what they're most curious about. "Her birthday is October 6th. She's going to be 16 next month."
"Meaning she could shift," Sean says, angrily. He jumps up and starts pacing, the wolf within him desperate to heal. "Alone. If she shifts, she'll be alone and confused, and scared because her dad is a fucking asshole who doesn't care about her."
I'm not sure where he got that information, since I didn't find that, but maybe he knows something we don't.
"Great," North says, angrily. "Just what we need. A feral shifter."
"The likelihood is that she's not a shifter," Kota says. "Let's all take a beat and calm down."
"But we don't know enough about her to make that call," Alpha Blackbourne says. "I want a more detailed background check done on the family. I don't like that we don't know enough about this... girl."
"I'll get on that," I say, reassuringly. "I just don't think I'm going to find much more on Sang."
"Then we befriend her," Kota says, and surprisingly Alpha nods, telling him to go on. "She's at our school. She lives on our street"—Kota motions between himself and Nathan—"and she's new enough that she needs friends. If we can just get to know her a little bit—"
"I don't think befriending her under false pretences will help if she does turn out to be a shifter," Luke says, with a frown. "Gabe and I are genuinely interested in getting to know her. Maybe we reach out, and eventually introduce her to the rest of you. That way there's no bad blood."
"Or you leave it to us," Sean says, glancing at Alpha who nods. "Owen's teaching Sang violin, and I'm teaching her Japanese. We'll all keep our distance until her birthday, and just observe from afar. That way, if she isn't one of us, we're not getting in the way."
"And if she is?" Silas asks. That's surprising. He's normally quiet.
"Then we'll reassess," Alpha says.
"She's not the priority, but we do need to keep an eye on her," Kota says, and Alpha Blackbourne nods.
"And if she approaches us?" Luke asks, and I know he's going to try and orchestrate that into happening.
"Then you react as you would normally with any random stranger," Alpha Blackbourne replies. "Now, onto the assignment."
The next hour is filled with recounting our first day, and planning on how we're going to deal with the school. We've got a lot to cover, and we're running behind.
