I say on the couch, picking up Judith and setting her in my lap so that Carl could sit down on my small couch. Leaning back into the cushions, I observed the children. Judith's eyes were glued to the screen, carefree and relaxed as she leaned back and rested her head in the crook of my neck, her soft hair tickling me ever so slightly.
Carl's eyes on the other hand were glued to his phone, his fingers sliding over his screen in a lightning motion.
"How are things with Enid?" I ask. Enid was a new girl in Carl's class. She was sweet, but she was known for having her moments like any young teenager. I had a partial liking for her though, because she brought out the best in Carl. I hadn't seen him smile this much since before his mother, Lori died giving birth to his sister three years ago.
"Well" he says, looking up from his phone briefly to give me a warm smile. "it's our one month anniversary tomorrow."
"Oh is it now?" I say sarcastically, nudging him with my shoulder playfully.
"She said she loved me the other day and-" He starts but I cut him off.
"Slow down there a minute sheriff." I say, using a nickname I gave him when he was younger when he used to run around in his fathers hat. "Yer sixteen, and you only have been dating for a month and you love each other?"
"Yeah, what's so wrong with that?"
I shook my head. I was 27 and I had been in love, or what I thought was love at the time, twice. And both times it had taken me months to realize that I was.
"Carl, don't you think yet going a bit too, I don't know, fast? I know that when I was yet age I felt sudden urges-"
Carl dropped his phone in his lap. "W-what?.. Uh... I'm not having this conversation with you," he says, his face turning a bright red color under his dark mop of hair.
There's a knock on my door before it slowly opens and Daryl pops his head in. "sorry.. er." he says, eyeing my before turning his gaze toward Carl. "Yer dad is waiting down in the lobby."
Carl stands up and I gently shift Judith in my arms, realizing she had fallen asleep while Carl and I were talking. I kiss her forehead before gently handing her to Carl. He gives me a slight smile and walks to the door.
"Bye kid." Daryl says, running his fingers through Carl's hair, ruffling it up. Carl shuts the door leaving Daryl and I alone in my apartment. I stand up and nervously wipe my hands on my leggings. "You want a beer?" I ask, trying to clear the awkwardness out of the room. "after all I do owe you a drink from the night at the bar."
"You don't owe me nothin'" Daryl says, walking over until he is standing right in front of me. "But this." Before I could say anything his lips crashed roughly on mine, his arms wrapping around my waist pulling me closer to him so that our bodies were pressed together. My hands moved without y convent up his body, getting a feel for what he felt like under his clothes.
And just as quickly as it started, it was over. Daryl broke away and gave me a smirk before he turned and walked out the door. I was left standing in the middle of the room, breathing heavily, and extremely confused. I touched my lips. "what just happened?"
