At the Lomonosov Velodrome, crowds of young people were cheering. It was well past midnight, but the place was active like a tournament.
At the death of winter, the cycling tracks were covered with a thick coat of ice, players in full ice hockey gear traveling in an anticlockwise direction, faster than a moving vehicle, racing over the ice puck.
The game was improper of course, but unlike conventional rink, the velodrome offers a banking angle, allowing better maneuver at extreme speed. But even in helmets and protective gears, the slightest error can be deadly, adding the dangerous tactics in ice hockey.
Two players from Blue Team have cornered a Red member, crashing her into a wall, so powerful her harness broke on impact, leaving her unconscious body sliding down the slope and into the center.
"We lost Yulia!" a Red member reported.
"The Twins are killing us!" another one yelled.
"Brooke!" Kira the captain yelled in her helmet. "If your friend is as good as you said, now it's the time!"
The game has only one point to score, and each team would do anything to stop the other from winning. There are no rules in the Death Ring, only the strongest team survives.
The Twins from Bauman University, each carries two-hundred pounds of muscles, have set their eyes on the next target - a lone figure in red. They moved into positions, taking the figure's rear and flank, ready to make their third kill of the night.
The sister on the right bringing her hockey stick low, aiming for a knee strike, while her twin coming in high, leaving their target no room to escape.
As they launched their attack, the small figure dropped to one knee, using the tip of her blade to brake sharp, scraping up a trail of ice as she made her spin. She swung her hockey stick and struck an ankle, tripping the attacker to her right, the sister landed on her face with a curse.
Seeing her twin struck down, the big sister raised her stick in rage, cutting down the figure like an axe. The figure dodged, but not soon enough, the hockey stick struck the top of her helmet, so hard it tore away from her head, unmasking the person underneath.
Under the blue spotlight revealed a pale face, pretty yet haunting, her left was a face of beauty, but her right eye was nothing but a hollow socket, like a warrior of the dead.
Before the sister could recover from her shock, the one-eye girl reached out and grabbed her helmet, swung her legs up the attacker's shoulder, pulling her heavy opponent off balance.
Still traveling at high speed, Chloe forced the bigger girl down on her back. She was like a fish in water, rolled on top of her attacker, pinning a knee to her opponent's neck, forcing her helmet scrapping against the ice, so hard the sister cried out.
"Twins down! Twins down!" Red players reported.
"Damn she's good!" Kira praised.
Seeing the change of events, Blue Team began swarming around the new player, attacking Chloe from all directions.
"I'm going to help her!" Brooke looked across the track.
"No! You're my wing!" her Captain said.
"She lost her helmet!"
"I need you!"
On opposite side of the track, Chloe was fighting against four Blue players, all swinging their sticks in a dangerous speed, Brooke could only trust her skill, and trust her Captain.
With the Twins removed, Kira and Brooke quickly caught the puck, passing to each other as they broke the last line of defense. Captain Kira gave her final swung, sending the puck into the goal. The home crowd cheered thunderously, roaring for their victory.
