*Static*
"Who'd I just pass there?... That you, Good Buddy?"
"Treetop tall and wall-to-wall. Travis, you messed up sonofabitch. What'chu doing on my road?"
"Late on a gig, bud. I'm taking the shortcut passed Silent Hill;... stopping for coffee as soon as I hit Brahms. I'm beat."
"Bad dreams still keeping you awake? I told you man, a girl or two would go a long way... Sleep like a baby with a chick in your cab."
"Guess I just don't meet the right girls, bud."
"Maybe if you weren't always blabbering about-- *static*-- remember how or why--"
"Hey chill. You don't see me bringing up your issues."
"*Laughs* No need. My lady keeps me fully informed of my failings. The girl keeps notes."
"You mean she hasn't left you yet?"
"*Laughs* Any day now. See you 'round, Travis. Take it easy."
"10-4. Catch you later, Buddy."
1976
Middle of the night, storm so thick he couldn't see the road passed the front of his truck. Even just doing 30 the wind was so bad it threatened to roll over his eighteen-wheeler. That's how bad it was. If there weren't a light on over the sign, Travis would've missed it.
BRAHMS
13 MILESHe supposed he was thankful for that. But he knew he wouldn't be sleeping tonight. He might have enough time for a break, but that was about all he could look forward to. It wasn't much, it never was, in this life though you have to take those moments when they come. The moments where you can sit down, and not think. Cause thinking... or heaven forbid sleeping... always brought the same images to mind.
He was just a kid, looking down into that grave...
That's why he was thankful for this job. It required him to stay focused and alert at all hours of the day and night. It didn't leave time for focusing on--
Travis slammed on the breaks, seeing the figure that jumped out into the road and collapsed. His tires skid on the wet pavement, threatening to run the figure down or tip the truck or both. But he managed to stop in time, the figure on their hands and knees in the middle of the road, caught in Travis' headlights.
Cautious, Travis stepped out of his vehicle. You never knew what kind of crazy you'd see in woods like this, this late at night, this far out in the middle of nowhere. Except, when he stepped out and moved to the front of the truck... the figure had already disappeared.
Alright Travis, walk away from this one...
He backed towards the door, but saw something in the door mirror. A little girl? He whipped his head around to see--... still nothing. Just, fog. Fog and the wind blowing leaves across the street. When he looked back at the mirror though-- she was still there! Moving towards him!
