A man stepped out of the shadows. I hadn't even heard him at all. How many other people had I passed by without noticing them?
His face was obscured by a mask. He had dressed darkly, to camouflage. He was either a thief, or a guard. The latter, more likely.
Moonlight through the window glinted off a sharp sword on his belt. I don't suppose he'd take a long time to unsheathe it.
"Who goes there?" he asked again, a snarl evident in his tone.
It took me a moment to find my voice. He could kill me in even less time.
"The Lady of this Estate," I replied. Surely, my voice was way too timid to be plausible.
He stared a while. My skin prickled. Perhaps I should've worn my mask. My stepmother had warned me against not doing so, and now look! The very moment I hadn't worn it, I got caught.
The guard took a step forward, hand resting on the handle of his sword.
