Chapter 3: Scarring

Distracted by checking the sky, Sophie was tackled from behind. Mason wrapped his arms around her, restraining her arms. "You can't outrun us," Mason growled.

Sophie struggled against him, the sky brightening, "Please, I'll hurt you!"

"Don't you know who I am?" Mason asked. "I doubt you can hurt me."

Sophie's voice got caught in her throat, a snarl replacing it. Eyes narrowed, voice deepened, fur sprouted. Mason continued to hold on as she changed from a woman to a beast. Her clothes ripped and tore as she grew a foot taller.

He struggled to hold her and eventually let her go, so he could change into his lycan form. It gave him a moment to regard the lycan in front of him. It snarled at him, getting into a fighting stance with claws outspread. Its brown fur was matted, and its black eyes dilated. Mason replied with a snarl of his own, copying the stance.

"We have the injection," Jack and Hunter appear behind him, changed into their lycan forms as well.

"Stay back," Mason snapped. "I can handle—"

The uncontrolled lycan launched forward before Mason could finish his sentence. It slashed at Mason, who jumped out of the way easily. The lycan growled in frustration, continuing to slash at Mason erratically. Mason continued to be on the defensive, dodging attacks. Something within him was urging him to hold back.

Then the lycan landed a slash across Mason's chest. Golden blood poured from the gash. Mason stumbled back, creating an opening for the lycan to bite his arm. Mason snarled, smacking the lycan on the nose, but the lycan held on, sinking its teeth deeper.

"Alpha!" Jack called out; his voice terse. Mason growled at him, but it turned into a wince at the end as the lycan pushed its claws into the wound across his chest. In a second, Jack and Hunter attacked the lycan, pulling it off Mason.

Mason winced as his Beta and Gamma attacked the lycan without abandon, "Wait, stop, don't hurt her!"

They paused, having subdued the lycan to the ground. One of the warriors came and injected the lycan with the serum. It almost instantaneously took effect, the lycan groaning and falling unconscious.

Mason stood, his wounds having already begun to heal, and stumbled over to the lycan. Jack and Hunter watched him worriedly. Mason watched the lycan for a moment, before turning to everyone, "Let's get it back home."

A group of warriors carried the lycan back to the SUV Sophie had escaped from. Mason trailed behind, allowing Jack and Hunter to lead. Why had he asked them to hold back? The lycan was already healing from their attacks, albeit slower now that the serum was circulating in their system. They weren't going to do permanent damage, as they wanted to learn more about Sophie and her supposed curse.

"I guess it's not supposed anymore," Mason mumbled. He watched as they loaded her into the trunk of the SUV, after laying down part of the backseats. Before he realized, he had sat in the remaining upright back seat, gazing down at the unconscious lycan's head beside him. Jack got into the driver's seat, with Hunter as the passenger, once again. Jack frowned as he watched Mason in the backseat, rubbing his chest where the lycan had slashed him.

The serum kept the lycan unconscious as they finished travelling back to the palace. Mason kept an eye on it the whole time. Obviously to ensure that it didn't awaken. At least that's what he was telling himself.

It was midmorning when they arrived, and instantly the lycan was taken to the dungeon. Mason began to argue that it needed to go to the pack doctor, but immediately backed down after a warning look from Jack. Mason watched the warriors take the lycan away, feeling uncomfortable. Jack clapped a hand on his arm, "Come on, dude. Let's go report to Their Majesties so that we can take a nap."
