Chapter 6: Prying into Minds
All Sophie could feel was pain. Someone was poking through her memories, but with a knife. She had no idea what they were looking for, but all she prayed was that it would be over soon.
Suddenly, the sharp pain disappeared, but a throbbing headache remained. Sophie pried open her eyes to see Mason cradling her in his arms. They were still in the dungeon, but Mason was leaning against the wall as Sophie was leaning against him. The collar was ripped in half and thrown to the other side of the cell.
"There you are," Mason's voice croaked. Sophie turned her head slightly to see Mason's red eyes. She turned her body, groaning in pain as she gripped her head. "Easy, easy."
"What happened?"
"Don't worry about that right now. Do you think you can stand? I think you should be checked out at the pack doctor."
Sophie nodded, but another sharp pain knifed through her brain. Mason helped her stand, but she leaned heavily on him as her knees wobbled.
"It's okay, I've got you," Mason picked her up. Sophie wrapped her legs around his torso, her arms around his neck. Sophie tucked her head into his chin, breathing him in. Mason walked moved from the cell, taking gentle steps to not shake Sophie. He felt her grimace every time he moved to readjust her.
"How can I help?" Doctor Rasa asked as Mason laid Sophie down on one of the beds.
"Just some strong pain medication, and a quick once over," Mason asked. Rasa frowned, knowing there was more to the story.
Mason followed Rasa to the other side of the room, out of earshot from Sophie.
"What's really going on?"
Mason sighed, "Amelia pried into her mind."
Rasa huffed, grabbing the strongest pain medication he could, "That's the first time in awhile that I've heard of her doing that."
"Pretty sure the last time she used it was on me, supposedly by accident," Mason rolled his eyes. "That was years ago, when we were still in high school."
"Is that the cursed woman?" Rasa gestured over his shoulder.
Mason growled again, but apologized and said, "Yes. How'd you hear about her?"
"I think just about everyone knows about the lycan that killed thirty rogues," Rasa smiled.
"Eighteen," Mason corrected.
"Still," Rasa peered around the corner to look at Sophie. "Insane."
"I don't disagree."
"Did Amelia tell you what she found?"
"Nothing, just as I suspected," Mason snapped. "Same story I heard from Sophie and her parents. Dad didn't even try to use the Alpha voice on her, instead jumping straight to Amelia." Rasa placed a hand on Mason's arm, reminding him that it was his father's job to protect them. "I know that, but I told him I trusted her." Mason peered around the corner, his anger dissipating slightly seeing her having moved to the window, a smile on her face as she looked out of it.
"I know that look," Rasa finished getting a pill container ready and chuckled at Mason. "I've seen it on every mate's face."
Mason chewed on his lip, then asked, "Do you think we could be mates?"
"You don't know?"
"I know you're supposed to know immediately, but maybe there's something blocking it. Possibly due to her curse?"
