Chapter 13: The Blood Moon and The Black Swan
The trio exited the palace to enter the garden. The final touches had been placed earlier in the day, the ice swan delivered, the catering and bar setup and hints of different fairytales everywhere. A random glass slipper. A red rose in a glass case. A small tower as a centerpiece.
Mason's heart clenched as he saw the little touches, which Sophie had worked on. People in their finery milled about, enjoying appetizers and sipping alcohol.
Hunter and Jack hovered around Mason until Mason ordered them to mingle. Mason kept an eye on them as they walked around, shaking hands as they introduced themselves.
Jack was the first to identify his mate. Mason watched as Jack's hand gripped another man's, who was wearing a suit that was the opposite of Jack's: burgundy suit with black accessories. The two locked eyes, both saying "Mate" at the same time. The pair then hugged and kissed, finally able to relax having found each other.
Hunter was next. He shook hands with someone who was wearing a jumpsuit with a skirt. Their situation was nearly a carbon copy of Jack's, although Hunter made his partner laugh before kissing them.
"What, are you still scoping out others?"
Mason's heart stopped, her musical voice sounding angelic in her ears. He turned to see Sophie, dressed in her gorgeous gown, decorated with jewelry. Her brown locks were pulled back in a low bun, small pieces framing her face.
"Sophie," Mason breathed out before rushing to her. She met him halfway, wrapping her arms around him tightly. "What happened?"
"I'm not sure, but I woke up in the forest far away. There was a cottage nearby and I took refuge there as I tried to figure out where I was. I was so scared," Sophie's voice was muffled by her face burrowing into Mason's chest. "I made it back an hour ago, after your mother found me."
Mason saw his mother behind Sophie, and he mouthed "thank you" to her.
"We're back together now, please don't worry," Mason said as he pulled back, wiping a few tears from Sophie's face. "Would you like to dance?"
Sophie gave Mason a watery smile and accepted his outstretched hand. The pair joined the many others who had made their way to the dance floor. Not all had found their mates, but those who remained still enjoyed the festivities by dancing with other unmated wolves.
Mason led Sophie around the dance floor, entranced by how effortlessly she seemed to be gliding along with him. Mason pulled her closer, so their chests were touching.
Matheus was seething as he watched his son and the homewrecker frolic around the dancefloor like they had heart emojis for eyes. His jaw was clenched as he tried to figure out how he could stop Mason from making a fool of himself.
"Where is she?" Matheus snarled under his breath, scanning the crowd for Felicity.
"They're a beautiful pair, aren't they?" A man spoke up from beside Matheus. He glanced over to see a man watching Mason and Sophie.
Matheus narrowed his eyes before schooling his tone as he recognized him as Sophie's father, Steven, "Yeah, sure."
"Such a shame they aren't mates," Steven said, clicking his tongue. He turned to Matheus, "But that doesn't matter right, Matheus?"
Matheus gritted his teeth again at the small level of disrespect Steven was showing him by calling Matheus by his first name. "They're just enjoying the night, Mason has a Chosen Mate that he will be announcing tonight."
Steven quirked a smile and nodded towards the pair, "Are you so sure about that?"
The music and dancing had paused, the crowd surrounding Mason and Sophie in the middle. Matheus shoved through the crowd to get a better look.
