After I got over the shock that my friend was half goat, we took off running. I could hear something bellowing from somewhere behind us. "What is that?" I yelled.
"You don't want to know. Just keep going." We ran and ran until I started wheezing and couldn't go anymore. "Grover," I gasped. "Stop!"
He shook his head, "We can't. That thing is gaining on us!" I guess I forgot to mention that I am a severe asthmatic. I slowed down and grabbed my inhaler from my bag. Grover stumbled to a stop and turned to me. "Are you okay?" He asked. I shook my head. "Can't....breath." I managed to get out before I had to take a puff of my inhaler.
"You have asthma?"
I nodded. Grover made the weirdest sound I had ever heard. It sounded like a goat being strangled. He looked around us and sighed, "I'm about to commit a crime."
"Uh.." Was all I could manage to say. He grabbed my hand and pulled me towards a moped parked on the sidewalk. "I'm going to regret this." He mumbled. He then pulled out these wooden pipes and played a tune that sounded suspiciously like Brittney Spears. The engine roared to life and we both hopped on. I put my arms around his waist and squeezed my eyes shut as we zipped through the city. I heard another bellow from behind us, it sounded a lot louder this time. Grover went even faster. I had no idea where we were going, I just hoped that Percy was okay. Finally, after what felt like forever, we arrived on the south shore of Long Island. We pulled up to this pastel box that was half way sunk into the dunes. A huge storm was raging around us, and Grover and I were both soaked. We lept off the moped and ran to the door. Grover banged on the door until a middle aged woman in a nightgown threw the door open. "Searching all night!" I gasped and then took out my inhaler and took another puff.
"What were you thinking?" Grover demanded. The women turned around and glared at Percy. "Percy!" She said, "What happened at school? What didn't you tell me?" Percy just stared at Grover in shock.
"O Zeu kai alloi theoi!" Grover yelled. "It's right behind us! Didn't you tell her?"
Percy still just stood there frozen in shock. "Percy. Tell me now!" Percy's mom demanded so sternly that Percy came out of his shock. He stammered something about old ladies at the fruit stand and demon math teachers. Percy's mom grabbed her purse, threw Percy a rain jacket and yelled, "Get to the car! All of you, now!" We all ran to the car and crammed into the backseat. Percy's mom hit the gas and we flew out of there. We zoomed through dark country roads. We all sat there in silence until Percy said to Grover, "So, you and my mom know each other?"
"Not exactly," Grover responded. "I mean, we've never met in person. But she knew I was watching you."
"Watching me?" Percy asked.
"Keeping tabs on you. Making sure you were okay. But I wasn't faking being your friend. I am your friend."
I coughed. "Excuse me. But I have been running around all night and you promised me answers." Percy and Grover looked at me like they forgot that I was there.
"There's no time LJ! That thing is right behind us!" Grover said, and then added, "I'm sorry Mrs. Jackson, but could you drive a little faster?" I looked behind us, there was a flash of lightning that lit up the sky enough for me to see a tall dark figure running after us. "Where are we going?" Percy asked.
"The summer camp I told you about," Mrs. Jackson said. "The place your father wanted me to send you."
"The place you didn't want me to go?"
"Please dear. This is hard enough. Try to understand, you and your friend are in danger." Percy and I looked at each other. "Because some old ladies cut yarn?" Percy asked.
"Those weren't old ladies," Grover said. "Those were the fates. Do you know what it means–the fact that they appeared in front of you? They only do that when you're about to....when someone is about to die."
"Whoa," Percy said. "You said 'you'."
"No I didn't. I said 'someone'."
"You meant 'you' as in me."
"I meant you like 'someone' not you 'you'."
"Boys!" Mrs. Jackson said. She then pulled the wheel and made a sharp right.
"What was that?" Percy yelled.
"We're almost there," Mrs. Jackson mumbled. "Another mile. Please. Please. Please." The rain started to fall harder, there was a loud 'boom' of thunder that shook the earth. All of the sudden, the hair rose on the back of my neck. There was a flash of lightning and the car exploded. "Ow." Percy mumbled. I grunted in agreement.
"Percy!" Mrs. Jackson shouted.
"I'm okay." He responded. That's when I noticed that Grover, on the other hand, was not okay. He wasn't moving and blood was coming from the side of his mouth. "Food." He groaned. In a flash of lightning, the huge dark figure was marching right for us.
"Percy. LJ. Out of the car. Now!" Mrs Jackson yelled. The door on my side of the car was stuck in the mud. "Percy, you guys have to run. Do you see that big tree?" Mrs. Jackson said. "What?" Percy demanded.
"That's the property line. Get over that hill and you'll see a big farmhouse down in the valley. Run and don't stop until you reach the door."
"Mom, you're coming too."
I looked at Mrs. Jackson, "We need your help with Grover. Percy can't carry him by himself and I won't be much help." She looked at me sadly but nodded. Percy and I scrambled out of the car, dragging Grover behind us. Mrs. Jackson and Percy carried Grover between them. I pulled out my small knife and followed close behind them. I heard a huge explosion behind us. The car gas tank had exploded, and for the first time, I could see the dark figure clearly. He was at least seven feet tall, he had super buff arms and legs. He had the head of a bull and wore nothing but what looked like tighty whities. I knew what I was looking at was the minotaur from the Greek myths. "Percy," Mrs. Jackson said. "When he sees us, he'll charge. Wait until the last second, then jump out of the way-directly sideways. He can't change directions very well once he's charging. LJ, you need to run ahead of us and get help. Do you understand?" I nod and rush past them to the tree lines. I got close when I heard a bellow of rage behind me. I turned around to see the beast had begun his charge. At the last second, Percy had dove to the right and his mom to the left with Grover. The beast grunted in frustration and turned on Mrs. Jackson and Grover. "No!" I screamed. I ran towards them. When I got close, I threw my knife at the beast. A wall of black energy seemed to push the knife forward through the air. It hit the monster in the shoulder. He bellowed in pain and waved his hand through the air, hitting me and sending me flying through the air. I crashed to the ground, my leg making a loud 'crack' I screamed in pain. My leg was definitely broken. "Hey!" I heard Percy yell. "Hey, stupid! Ground beef!" The monster lost interest in me and charged after Percy. What happened next, I couldn't tell you. I heard bits and pieces of Percy's fight but I was in so much pain, everything was muddled. I started Wheezing. I needed my inhaler, but I couldn't move to get it. After what felt like forever, I felt myself being picked up by strong arms. I was wheezing so bad at that point. "Hold on." A voice said. "Hold on a little longer." That's when everything faded to darkness.
Author's note:
That Chapter was crazy! In the Percy Jackson world, there aren't really any demigod's who have physical illnesses, which is why I gave LJ Asthma, to show the human side of a demigod. I am so excited for this next chapter. Who do you think rescued LJ? And do you have any idea who LJ's dad could be? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
