Tony's POV
It'd been two months since New York and I'm still recovering from the fall.
Physically I'm fine. But mentally... not so much. The dreams that I have are horrible. instead of myself I see Steve in my place, but in those dreams, or night mares if you will, Bruce isn't there to save the day. And then there are the ones in which I fail to save the people I care for and everyone around me is dead. It's horrible.
And every night, I wake up, sobbing, in my dorm room. Steve will shake me awake, he'd place kisses on my forehead and pull me close, telling me that it'd all be okay. That I would be okay. That we would be okay.
Tonight was another one of those nights.
I watched as aliens flooded through the unclosed portal, my suit was broken and I was on the wrong side of the portal to help anyone. I turned around and found a pile of bodies, Steve was at the bottom of it, his shield broken in half next to him. I ran to him, sobs racking my body. I fell to the ground next to him and shook him, hoping that he was only asleep.
"No. No!" I yelled.
"Tony! Tony wake up!" I heard a familiar voice break through the dream. I sobbed harder and opened my eyes to find Steve hovering over me, shaking my shoulders.
He sighed heavily when my eyes opened and he pulled me into a warm embrace. I sobbed into his neck, trying to erase the dream from my mind. I couldn't lose him, not after all that's happened.
"I love you." I whispered into his neck and he froze before relaxing and laughing a bit.
"I love you too, Tony." I smiled and kissed his neck, the dream forgotten.

One week laterMy birthday was a month ago, and today was Steve's birthday. The team and I have been busy decorating the rooftop all day. Steve hid himself away in the training room as soon as he woke up. He said that he was going to go hide from "Happy Birthdays" and that if I needed him that I'd know where to find him.
Obviously he doesn't know what we're planning.
It'll just be the team and Fury might drop by. I think he'll like it, or at least I hope he will.
It's six o'clock now and I'm heading down to the training room to get him. We're supposed to be upstairs at seven but I'm going to get him to shower before we go. I don't think he'd be happy with me if I let him go to a surprise party without at least making him shower first. Not that I mind his sweaty body. It definitely doesn't bother me, but I know he wouldn't like that.
I enter the training room and smirk as I watch him beat the crap out of a punching bag. He hit the thing one last time and it went flying across the room, it landed on a pile of seven or eight broken bags.
Damn.
"Hey sexy." I said while walking towards him. Sweat glistened on his skin. He'd taken his shirt off at some point. He turned to me looking surprised. He blushed a bit when he saw me checking him out.
Good. He's cute when he blushes.
"Tony. What are you doing here?" He asked, looking confused. I smiled at him and grabbed his hand, pulling him out of the room.
"I have a picnic planned. And you need to shower." I laughed as he groaned.
"I told you I didn't want you to do anything like this." He whined and I rolled my eyes and smirked.
"Trust me, you'll like it." and with that I dragged him back into our dorm and pushed him toward the shower.
"Now go shower." He groaned again and headed toward the shower.
He took a quick shower and he started to get ready as soon as he got out. I put a suit on, struggling with the tie.
Steve's fingers tugged mine away and tied it for me. When he finished he turned me around so I was facing him. His arms wrapped around my waist and mine around his neck.
He bent and kissed me softly.
"I really do appreciate the birthday stuff, I just don't like being made a big deal out of." He said quietly, his forehead resting against mine.
"I know." I smile up at him and give him a soft peck on the lips before grabbing his hand and leading him out of the room and up the stairs.
"Where exactly are we going?" He asked and I gave him a mischievous look before turning back around and continuing up the stairs, leaving his question unanswered. He'll figure it out soon enough.
I stuck a hand in my pocket and grabbed my phone, staying in front of Steve to keep it hidden. I sent a single letter to Natasha, it didn't matter what letter I hit, it was the signal we'd discussed before, so they could know when we were on our way up. I discreetly tucked my phone back in ii my pocket and continued up the stairs, Steve still behind me.
We came to the top of the stairs and I opened to door for him, giving him a smile. He stepped through it and I followed him, he looked around the rooftop in awe, there were streamers and Fairy lights covering the ledge and hanging from every possible place. It looked magical.
"Surprise!!" Natasha, Clint, Bruce, Thor, and I yelled as he stepped further out onto the rooftop. He smiled from ear to ear and walked towards me, he kissed me softly and I smiled into the kiss.
Natasha cleared her throat.
"You two are cute and all but we're still here." She smirked at the two of us and I smiled up at his blushing face.
"Happy birthday, Captain America."
