I stand by my locker the next day, trying to mind my own business while Riley talks with Charlie next to me. I'm waiting for Charlie to leave so I can get a chance to talk to her. Even though I know that she won't want to talk to me.

"Can we hang out tonight?" Riley asks him.

"Sure. What time do you want me over?" He asks.

"It doesn't matter. Just come when you're ready." She replies.

I tune them out after that. I just patiently wait until I glance over and Charlie is gone.

"Um, Riley?" I speak. She sighs heavily, looking up at me.

"What do you want?" What do you want from me?" She questions.

"Look. I know we got off on the wrong foot-"

"You lifted me up, and started claiming that I was like your long lost best friend or something!"

"Yeah. But how about we have a fresh start. What do you say?" I offer.

"A fresh start?" She echoes.

"Yeah. Like forget about what I did and start over." I reply.

"That depends. Will you leave me alone?" She questions.

"Yeah, I guess..." I mumble.

"Good. Then a fresh start it is." She says happily before strutting off.

"Not speaking to Riley today?" Hunter inquires at lunch as we eat. I shrug.

"I agreed not to bother her anymore." I replied.

"So you're just going to give up? That's it?" Eldon questions.

"Yeah. Well, for now I will." I reply.

"You got some nerve, challenging Charlie like that." He says.

"What's the big deal about Charlie anyway? Everyone adores him, but why?" I ask.

"Because he's nice and goes out of his way for everything. If some kid is failing a class, he will tutor them. If a school club or group needs money, he'll organize a fundraiser." He explains.

"But is really like that? Like, nobody can't be that nice." I scoff.

"Apparently he is though. He wouldn't turn anyone down." Hunter replies.

"But look at the way he got every time I tried to be around Riley. He lifted me off the ground and threatened me! So no, I don't think he's really who he puts himself out to be." I tell them.

"You got a point. But as far as everyone knows, he's the best person you can talk to." Eldon says.

I look past him to where Charlie was sitting with Riley. Their friends were long gone by now, and it was just them at the table. Riley was sat on his lap, her head nuzzled into the crook of his neck while he rubbed her back slowly.

There is no way that he's as perfect as he says he is. And I'm going to figure out what he's hiding.
